Usually there are signs before they go. they will bind a little or you will see some freying but not always. Alot depends on the storage conditions , weather ridden in, amount of use , how often you lube them. They don't break often though in most cases but it does happen. Most common cause is just age and wear but they can also be bound and wear do to that or rub against something.
