I recently purchased an HJC AC-3 hemet which is DOT and Snell approved. It's seems to be a very good helmet and has the air vents on top and it's insides are washable. This helmet seems to me to be really large in diameter. I am assuming this is because it is made to be very safe being Snell approved. Are all Snell approved helmets a little larger in outside diameter?
My wife says I look like a martian in it :-). I guess it's because I am not a very big framed guy with a big helmet. I don't really care about the looks as I passed that a long time ago. I just like the safety and comfort of it.
Also, according to all of the sizing charts I "should be" a Large according to my head measurement, however the XL is the one that fits me. Not sure what's going on there.

Regarding size, I recently changed from a HJC CL-14 XL to a Shoei RF-1000 Large. The salesman convinced me that the XL was way to large even though it felt good...so I got the Large. After a small amount of breakin...I am VERY glad I went with the tighter fit. Easier to turn my head while riding and feels all around safer.
On your other point...i think COLOR has a lot to do with the looks. Silver will look LARGE and black helments will look smaller.

Thanks, I returned the helmet today for a "Large" (in black instead of the silver). It does fit somewhat tighter but I think it will be better later on.
I was just at the cutoff size between L and XL I think.

I picked up an HJC CS-5 3/4 helmet ($82) a few weeks before the Georgia trip. XL, which fits my oversized head pretty much fine, the tight spots are getting less tight with time. Other makes I need a XXL, letter size designations don't seem to compare across mfc'ers. The shape comes into play  . jwh

I have an AC3. It was too large for me. At speed it would try and lift up and choke me. I bought a Full face HJC from a local dealer. They made sure it fit correctly.

I had the same size issue with the Scorpion helmet (silver). only 5'8, and do not have a luggage head, but ended up in an XXL, which fits snugly. but I look like the silver power ranger. Looking at black HJC CL-15s now

I've been riding with that new size 'L' HJC AC-3 helmet and it really feels right and quieter because of the snugger fit at the ears. I also purchased the pull down clear face shield and now I like it even better.

Does anyone know how the Jafrum helmets stand up to others? It's comfortable, vented and inexpensive. But is it worth it? DOT certified so they say.

I had the cheap helmet conversation with someone else. If it is DOT certified, Aussie certified or any other certified then it MUST meet the standards laid down. The more expensive the helmet does not always mean the higher the standard. You may just be paying for a name.
Having said that...
I have a really expensive helmet - a Davida - and love that (I bought it for the paint job), a couple of Roofs and a cheap one I bought in Oz and bought back. The last full face I bought was an HJC but I only wore it a couple of times. Then I got really claustrophbic in it and had a bit of a panic attack and wore it to go and get the first Roof.... haven't worn it since. Not the fault of the helmet though. Just me being neurotic.

I don't know about the fit and you seem to have fixed that issue with the switch to the Large. I can recommend this helmet. I was wearing one when I went down in June of '06. According to eyewitness accounts (not mine as it just happened to fast) I landed on my head. Walked away without even a scratch or concussion. I did have to replace it and didn't go with another AC 3 only because I went with a full face this time.

Scorpion 400 XXXL here myself. I took this girl for a ride once on my bike, she had a SMALL head (and her own helmet thankfully). Her HELMET was smaller than my head.

I heard (don't know if this us true or not) that HJC shells are the same. It's just the insides that are sized. Anyone else heard that?

HJC makes a really good helmet. If you spend more money, you are buying comfort. In 40 years of riding, I've found that the more expensive helmets provide comfort and "coolness" in the hot weather. Now, as far as the novelty helmets go, if you've got a $6 head, get a $6 helmet. You've gotta wear them anyway, go ahead and get a decent one. I used to see a lot of dead people who would be alive if they'd just had a $30 helmet. I've heard all the arguments and I seldom wear leather, but riding without a helmet screams out, "I AM SO VERY STUPID!!!". Helmets look cool, and smart.

Thanks Spider, After viewing your AC-3 helmet pics I think I will keep wearing mine. It's getting more comfortable now. Besides I now believe it's better to have a jack-in-the-box head in one piece than take a big chance on having a busted up one.  Bob
