Regarding size, I recently changed from a HJC CL-14 XL to a Shoei RF-1000 Large. The salesman convinced me that the XL was way to large even though it felt good...so I got the Large. After a small amount of breakin...I am VERY glad I went with the tighter fit. Easier to turn my head while riding and feels all around safer.
On your other point...i think COLOR has a lot to do with the looks. Silver will look LARGE and black helments will look smaller.
