Kerosene seems to be the chain cleaner of choice and I thought I might go that route. I started looking about on-line trying to figure out who would stock it, but cannot find it. I would think that Home Depot sells it, but they certainly don't list it on their website. Where is the best place to buy a good sized can of it? Thanks.

Some gas stations have pumps for it. You can get cans of it in Lowe's & Home Depot.

Well the most common use for Kero around here is torpedo heaters, and to cut diesel in the winter. Since your in FL I'm guessing that you have neither demand. You can usually find it at the indepdant gas station that has been around forever. That or in 5 gallon jugs at a hardware store. But that would be more than a lifetime supply.

i just bought a one gallon can at the local ace hardware. I would assume diesel or heating fuel would work the same, just smell a whole lot more.

You can use tiki torch fuel you get at Home Depot, etc. It also has citronella in it and will keep bugs off your chain. Works as good as kerosene. I couldn't find any around here.

coleman fuel too. Thats white kerosene.
Edited by moe: CAUTION: Coleman fuel is NOT kerosene.
Decane (mostly). Kerosene/diesel is a crude cut from oil refineries, boiling point range is approximately 180° to 280° C. May have pink or blue colour added (U.K.).
Whereas White Gas, Naphtha, Coleman Fuel, Blazo are 60% Hexane + 40% Heptane? Usually colourless?
Unleaded gas should only be used in Coleman® appliances marked as “Dual Fuel™†or Unleaded Fuel†and only the lowest octane unleaded gas available should be used. Unleaded gas contains additives that are more difficult to vaporize than the gas itself and the higher the octane rating of the fuel, the more additives mixed with the gas. Unleaded gas from Canada should never be used in any Coleman® appliance, even the “Dual Fuel™†and “Unleadedâ€Â, as there is an additive in the fuel which will damage the tank, valve, generator and burner assembly.

Have a look round your local grocery store. Here they stock things like kerosine, metholated spirits (think you guys call it white spirits?), turpentine etc in 1 litre bottles in the hardware section. Or you could go to your local hardware store and ask em for a litre bottle (roughly 1/2 gallon for you non-metric folks).

In Italy we call it "petrolio bianco lampante" = white petrol for lamps. Or white kerosene.
I think it's common in small can of few oz into every home depot shop. Or it's often near all the paint diluent and chemicals in every tools and hardware shop. Used to clean and lubricate mechanicals. The use for petrol lamps is uncommon now. It has a bad smell, but it's good to clean chain without hurt the o-rings.

I don't know about that last comment. Most of the winter additive I use smell much worse than any kero or diesel I have ever seen.

They're also consistently THE cheapest gas station in the New Milford area, and get ALL of my business unless I absolutlely can't wait.

White kerosene is more refined and drys and is more easy to clean with absorbent paper. Diesel doesn't.

I get it at the local bulk oil dealer. You have to bring your own container though.

I've been meaning to buy some Kero for a while now to clean my chain, but now I'm leaving it till I get the 17tooth counter from Brent when I'll really give the chain a good going over. BTW, Thanks for the tip that Kero is a good choice for cleaning chains.
