You might try one of those rubber pads that you use to open jars. The filter shouldn't be THAT tight. After that, get a K&N filter (part #kn-191). They have a hex nut on them for easy tightening/un-tightening.
BTW - a plastic strap wrench would be no match for the powder coated frame. It won't scratch it...
