Backbone that's good.Mine does hurt more now.Remember you are the head of the household, don't forget though she is the neck that turns the head. For real now, with gas always going up more quickly than pay.Do the math, for me it was very easy to point out with the money I would save not buying as much gas for my old truck,I could easily make the bike payment. That was over two years ago. Now there is a winding mountain road north of hear I took my first wife(NOTE FIRST)up it on my old Suzuki back in about 1984. We went up that hill like I liked to back then. She was hitting me in my back. She seemed very upset that I was almost dragging my knees.BIG mistake. Took my wife(#2) on my Speedmaster a little over a month ago up the same road.I never went up or down that hill so slow on a bike.Point is she was happy,I did not get punched in the back. That hill or road is Yarnell Hill on the way up to Presscott,Az. She had a good experence.Oh and yes she of course found some places for shopping(!@#$oh boy!!).She did cry about the seat, thus a new touring seat.Got to keep her happy. It was a good excuse for the new seat.Good luck.Ride!!!

You just need to give her the statistical facts that you came up with on a Internet search....(exclude the fact it was not Google or Wikipedia but from this site)

1. It has been statistically proven that motorcycling men are more attentive to women. (Leave out any reference to rubber necking while riding...that women do)
2. It is statically proven that men who ride motorcycles buy their women flowers more than men who do not ride motorcycles. (Leave out any reference to making up for buying chrome)
3. Statistically Men who ride motorcycles are better lovers, caring and sensitive. (Again leave out reference to buying chrome)
4. Men who ride motorcycles are healthier (Leave out reference to the fact they are not really healthier, but waste their sick time on mental health days riding their bikes and therefore can not afford to be sick)
5. Remind her that statically men who don't get motorcycles are prone to incessant whining.

Real simple Suzie said I was not allowed to have one noway she said we sold your old one so there was no way you were getting a new one. I bought the Triumph the next day. Since then she has had not one but two bikes and enjoyed the ride.

Use the gas prices! That is especially effective in your area. If that doesn't work, buy her one too.

The flower reminded me when we went to Laconia. We stopped for a min along the road , my friend picked a flower for his OL. Wendy asks why don't you ever give me anything? I picked up a rock and gave it to her! LOL Funny thing is she still has that rock with the time ,date, and place I gave it to her written on it. She asks my friend OL if she still has the flower from time to time and when she says no Wendy proudly says she still has the rock!! LOL Gotta love her.

This thread reminds me how much I love my wife.
She went out for a mothers day ride today. I stayed home and tended the BBQ.

John,

Not to rub it in, but Linda and I took the bikes to the toymakers for breakfest and then went for a 130 mile ride through north west Conn..

Show her this thread and let her read it. I bet after she reads this you will have a new bike in the Garage tomorrow.

You could all ways try this buy the bike put it in the gargae when she comes home and says what is that !!

Have a dumb look on your face and say what !!! Where did that come from !!! lost cat thing.

In all seriousness. Wendy never tells me what to do with my money and I never tell her what to do with hers. Guess I'm the lucky one she actually bought both our bikes not me.

LOL. Yes 2 of them. One works in reservations for the Swan and Dolphin hotels at Disney. We stayed there last fall on the preferred guest floor in a $300 a night room for $60 a night. Both married though.

They are nothing like Wendy though either. I am just a lucky man.

Very simple Powerband, I used that one deadly tool that women posess and use mercilessly, "the Pout" but in a somewhat altered way. When we first met, and got married, I had a 700 Sabre, which I LOVED, and we loved riding it together and all of that. Well, we sold it after I moved from CT to Florida, and we were preparing to move to IL so I could go back to school, and so needed any free cash. Well, the minute after they carted it off, I knew it was a major mistake. And, ever since then, when I was outside (or even inside for that matter), and a bike went by, my head would instinctively cock in the direction of the sound and I would vanish off into the thousand yard stare of forlorn sadness. And, she would fall right into the trap with "Oh, honey, I hate to see you so miserable (I really did get the "dog in the pet store window" down pat!) Finally, on one early summer day in '03, with endless evenings of bikes going back and forth in front of our house, and me cocking my head like a dog about to chase a car, I sprung the trap. We had at this point discussed it, and she had "given permission" and I had gone out looking for an 883, a Magna or something similar, and stumbled across the America, and had shown her the BEAUTIFUL pictures online and in the catalogues. Then I said, "well, I got a quote on insurance today, and checked the other day about a loan, and gee, it really is pretty affordable, I was shocked how CHEAP it was!" RRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!(screeching brake sounds!) WIFEY: "You did, huh? Honey, bikes make me nervous! I really hope that you'll think about it (woman speak for "I hope you'll realize that you're NOT getting this bike and will go along with my subliminal DECREE!" Well, expecting such nonsense, I'd already done the loan paperwork, and the check was on its' way to the house in the mail. "BUT HONEY, I've already got a loan approved, and they have a bike in stock over in Greenville, the exact model and color that I want!" (man speak for "OH ****** NO! You've never expressed this last-minute dread of bikes before and we used to LOVE going for rides around CT in the summer!! The die is cast woman!") Well, being good at pouting without seeming pouty, she caved to my forlorn, but resigned face, and said, "OH, if you promise to be really careful, I'll be nervous, but go ahead! But please be careful!" And the rest is history. We went that Saturday to take delivery of Blue, and when she saw the "ga ga" look and glazed over eyes, she knew that I was lost to the dark side...

Bayern,

The "pout" was something that worked very well for me, too, a decade ago. Unfortunately, I abused it over the years and now its value to the wife is no higher than that of a burp or a fart: purely annoyance.

When we met, our "first date" was, in fact, on a Honda CB750, a jaunt down to the local burger hangout, where she hardly took a bite from her burger due to the sheer excitement of being wind-swept on the backseat. She loved that bike, I swear, sometimes more than she loved me. I'm sure it was what the bike stood for... new, carefree, exciting, dangerous. Isn't this the mentality of a new affair? My, how things change after a few years of marriage.

Well, I already have life insurance....and my wife got tired of the whining. We also met when I was on a motorcycle. That helps alot. Oh..and she used to chase me to the races to watch me ride too. Keep trying dude, you will eventually wear her down.

Sounds like it's time for rekindling those feelings on a new Triumph. That's what my wife's eyes told me when she handed me a check for mine last December. 20 years ago, our first date was similar to yours. Had other bikes in between, but the Triumph reminded her of "our" first bike. We're back to taking midnight rides to nowhere. Life is good!

With a wife & three kids and associated debt loads, I hadn't owned anything like a motorcycle in many years, which is cool - I made the decision to start a family, and have no regrets about doing so.

Each Spring I would host a silent & internal motorcycle fever fest. It would pass by Summer. No biggie. I have always had a lot to be thankful for, despite the occasional bump in life's road. In May of '06, I had an ebay based '05 Speedmaster up on my computer screen. My wife walked by and asked, "Are you thinking about buying a motorcycle?" I replied, "Not really." She then said "I think you should." I don't remember what I said, but it was likely drowned out by the sounds of 'type type type, bid bid bid.

She & I have been through a lot together, including one daughter with severe Schizophrenia, another a now (thank God) recovering Heroin addict, and a third with Borderline Personality Disorder from her bio 'mom' cutting out / running away on them years ago. Add to that my Diabetes, 2 heart attacks, and my surviving Cancer. (What can I tell ya - sh**ty genes) Like all of us, and we're not the Lone Rangers when it comes to these things, we've seen some challenges. With her close proximity to these and other issues, she shares my belief that if you want to have fun and live life, you better get to it, and not wait. There is also a drop top Mustang GT in the yard. If people want to call it a mid-life crisis, that's fine. I consider it closer to a mid-life I can finally afford it anything but a crisis.

Pardon my trite, but I can't say it better than Morgan Freeman in "The Shawshank Redemption"

I have enjoyed reading all the stories (and suggestions) this thread has created, and hope to continue doing so.

In my mind, buying an item costing nearly $10,000 without the blessing of the wife is no more "manly" than slapping her in the face. My first lesson from my father is to never, ever strike a woman. A lesson I would now teach a young man is to give the wife the same respect he'd expect from her, and attaining mutual agreement on a large purchase is a show of respect to the lady. It is no longer the 50s and women are no longer barefooted.

I believe I will respectfully convince my wife over time to agree to buying a motorcycle, and perhaps have her be a part of the wind, but meanwhile it is a good thing to read what other folks have gone through to put a Triumph in their garage.

Respectfully,
John

Figure out what she wants and scratch that itch, the rest is easy. The hard part was when she walked in my shop and I had a sawsall in one hand and a sixpack on the workbench and a new bike sitting in parts on the floor. She still won't let me touch her car.

My wife won't let me touch her bike either.
The cars I can take them apart and fix them.
But not her bike, the thing is running so lean its killing me, but no I can't take it apart.
For advice on how to do it, I think the women of BA.com will be your best guide.
I have always hated the "used car salesman" approach of be a man ****** her off.
Screw that. I would want her to go out and spend 10 thousand without telling me.

On a side note I did get her good one night a few years ago. I had headed out all day to drive around. I ended up test driving a couple new trucks. This was when the "24 hr" test drive had just started, so I took it home. Got home, causally dropped the keys on the table and waited for her to look outside. It was awesome, I let her rant and scream for a good 10 minutes before I couldn't stop laughing. Still didn't get that truck though.

Respectfully,
John

Keep lovin' your woman this way and that bike will be in your garage by Memorial Day.

Gina and Triumphgoddess--
Yep - what's a husband?....not having had one for quite some time, and not so sure I want another one....for any number of reasons, one of which is that I LIKE making my own decisions.

And yes, John seems to be one of those good ones.

John - I actually got rid of my first bike for my soon to be husband - he didn't like them and was afraid of them (possibly for good reason), and he agreed to stop chewing tobacco. It took him 10 years to hold up his end of the bargin, my bike was sold within months of the deal.....se la vie....

You just need to get her involved....taking the MSF course, not necessarily together(husbands can be a little too overprotective sometimes)....reminding her of the past good times on a MC. I agree with the theory too that if you don't live it now, you won't get a chance later.... leave life without regrets (of any kind).
my 2 cents
Becky

OH, John, I did neglect to leave out one MINOR, INSIGNIFICANT detail of course. About 2 years after the bike (and a few heavy hints of course from aforementioned "lil woman"), I bought my wife a Beetle Convertible, and she has never ever griped about my wanting to go for rides since!!

Oh, and I didn't tell her I was doing it either, although afterwards I did give her the choice to go back to our old Nissan Sentra...

I'd say that's quid pro quo...

no kids...smart man!!!! more toys hahahahaha talk her into takeing the msf course together. after she realizes that this can be done safely and she feels comfortable she will probably understand and accept the idea. most people (like said before) have preconcieved ideas programed into them by people that have never ridden, but if she drives a bike in the class and understands the die namiks of it all, she may be more open to the idea, and may want her own?? if not i go with any and all previous advice.

ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

My wife's initial position was get a motorcycle, get a lawyer. Over the years, she has evolved that to get a motorcycle, get a big insurance policy. A little longer and she'll be buying it for me.

He was fun while he lasted.
