Maybe I should say overly-aggressive.
After looking at the bike that is the final answer -- I was too aggressive on the counter-steering.

For those of you who didn't make the GA rally, I low-sided in a hairpin turn at a speed that should have been safe.

The harder-than-usual hit of the right peg that I felt was actually the cover at the lower bend of the header pipe hitting asphalt. Good size smashed spot there. The front tire shows scuffs all the way to the lip at the edge. She simply slid out from under me.

As for the ankle, I am walking OK with a bit of a limp. Once again, I was luckier than I have a right to be.

PS... if you can't use the rear brake, stay out of gravel and grass. Sure way to do a slow-motion drop.

PPS... thanks everyone for your help and concern and all: to wojo getting me back to the house; to our gracious hosts chy and diane; to steevesixmil and the guys who came by the room to check on me, bringing ace bandages and cheer; to all who I didn't list.
Best bunch of folks one could ever meet!

Gary,

I am really glad you are doing better. I hope your fracture heals quickly.

A couple of times I was a little aggressive myself, and scrapped the pegs. Our bikes have reasonable clearance, but not great.

Well, they're not sport bikes but compared to any other cruiser I've seen out there we do very well. A good set of tires and upgraded springs/shocks will let us turn with most everyone except the dedicated sport bikes.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Gary,
Glad you made it home ok. It was really kinda weird to come around that corner and see you in the ditch. Couple months, you should be good as new. I think your wife is gonna make you leave the bike at home next year.

Gary, glad you are home and keep us posted on how the healing goes. The most important thing is that you were able to walk away from the experience.

Take it steady on your ankle... if you don't you'll be hurting for far longer...

Big hug from me.

Gary,
Glad to hear you made it home OK!

I hope you know my offer to put your bike on my trailer and
take you to AL was sincere. If the roles were reversed, I'm
sure you would do the same for me. In fact, I think Martin's
decision to ride home was in part so I wouldn't feel bad about
ditching him, to give you a lift.

I was aways back in the pack when you went down. My heart was
in my throat as I came around that corner. You were down, and
bikes were pulling over, left and right. I started to pull
over as well, but decided to zoom up the road a bit, and stop
to flag traffic. As soon as I got off my bike (without time
to take my helmet off), I stand in the road waving my arms
like crazy to slow down a tri-axle dump truck coming around
the corner. I had visions of the truck not being able to stop,
and plowing into the stopped group.

Thankfull that things didn't turn out worse,
Uncle Charlie

P.S. Oddly enough, I twisted my right ankle yesterday,
and I'm limping around

Gary -

is that 2 for 2?

I did not know you were going again this year. Hate hearing about the mishap, but glad you are alright. Anything I can do from here, let me know.

Geez Gary, anything for attention! Seriously, glad you are ok and didn't suffer much worse than a limp for a while. You'll be back out scootin' again in no time. Guess you won't make it to New Ulm this coming weekend, huh? Get better!

Glad you are okay buddy. Hey folks, before he knew his ankle was fractured, he rode over 20 miles back to the motel. Don't mess with Texas.

Hey Gary - I will never forget that day. I am so thankful you are OK! I was 2 bikes back and the first to pull the bike off your ankle (while someone yelled "watch the ankle!). I thought about that for a split second and couldn't see any reason to leave you trapped under the bike. I'll take the blame if that was the wrong call.....

Don't know if anyone remembers what the next corner looked like.....a sharp left with no guard rail with nothing but rugged mountain side. You picked the right corner.

Definately a road that commands your respect.

I'm glad you are alright and ride safe.

Jeff
