Yesterday I was planning on meeting my wife and her friend down at the local pub after work. Jumped on my bike, turned the key and nothing but an irritating loud buzzing noise. I checked the source and the sound comes from under the plastic electrical cover on the right side of the bike. I checked all of the connections and fuses and they all seem too be in order. Do I need a new battery or is is their another problem. Please help! I do not want to take her to the dealer.

Thanks

I think that's where the solenoid is. Do you think it's not getting enough juice to turn the motor? Like a low battery?

Thats what I was thinking. I was going to try to put a charge on it and see what happens. I may need a new battery. Its an 02 and I am still running the stock one. i was just hoping there is nothing else it could be. I am low on cash right now and want to ride my bike. Plus I need new tires.

Try tightening the connections on the battery. I had the same problem before and it was just loose screws.

That is definitely the starter relay chattering. If she'll hold a charge, fine. I'd park on hills for awhile though!

How old is your battery. You may be due a replacement.

geez Fill...if you'd READ ANY OF THE PREVIOUS POSTS you'd notice it's the stock battery out of an '02 bike.

That is often the case around here

Well Shane, since you live in the "BEEHIVE" state, I'd be real careful digging into where that buzzing is coming from .

I had the same issue on my '05. As the others pointed out, it's more than likely a low voltage issue. A new battery cured mine.

Forgive me if this is obvious, but a full overnight charge before using is a good way to start a new battery out. (NAPA sells a dandy shipped dry / add acid bike battery that's a slight bother, but at least you know it's fresh that way.)

Of interest may be the fact that at 11,000 miles, the high amperage contacts on my starter relay were snug, yet in dire need of a proper cleaning. I took it as a cue to clean all the starter and charging contacts with a little wire brush. It only takes an hour or so. I do believe I'll make the wire brush deal part of the Spring tune up. I hates walking home.

I found that a little dielectric grease goes a long way toward avoiding those problems too.

Thanks Guys!! I was hoping is wasn't the actual relay. I will check the battery connection. If its that simple fine otherwise I'll jump it and take it down to the shop to trickle charge it. I may need a new battery.

Again, Thanks all!

Bobbed - as you likely know, jumping a bike battery with a car battery usually fries the bike battery.

Ladisney - At the risk of starting a debate similar to "which oil is best," kind of a thing, I wondered about this when I re-assembled my electricals - is it correct to use grease on the high amp side? I was taught (whether right or wrong) that nothing should get in the way of the metal to metal on the battery terminal connections, yet some non-conductive aerosol sealant sprayed around the outside of the terminals is fine.

FWIW, I did use some grease on the high amp connections, (except at the battery) and so far, all is well.

Somewhere, I read an explanation of why a solenoid chatters on low voltage.
There's enough juice in the system to close the relay (click).
When it closes and introduces the load of the starter, voltage drops further and the relay opens back up (click).
Now it's back to where it started and the cycle is repeated.

FYI. Hooked my charger up and she turned over. I have a trickle charge on it now to see if it holds. Otherwise I may be forkin' out some $$ for a battery. Now I need tires and a battery

I have heard that once these batteries get drained to a certain point they don't come back.

Good luck I hope yours isn't one of those.

Mine went dead one winter, and I was able to charge it and bring it back for a whole season. The following winter is when I had to replace it.
