For the last couple of years, (and it seems to be getting a lot worse), I see caravan after caravan of towed vehicles heading south down U.S. Hwy 59 to Mexico. My folks live about 80 miles north of Houston, and I have been going up there since the mid 70's, but especially over the last year have I noticed this "phenomenon".
These guys travel in caravans of 4-6 vehicles, each pulling another behind with a tow-bar. It would not be unusual to pass 12-20 such vehicles heading south in an hour's drive, and though I travel at night a lot, I do not know 1) how legal all of this is, or 2) is it going on 24/7 around the clock? Saw some last night with Missouri plates on the towed car, but most of the driven vehicles have no plates at all. I am sure these cars are all purchased at auction. I have seen the same happening on I-35 between Waco and Fort Worth, so I feel like it is probably happening nationwide.
Is this NAFTA related? Is it a bad thing? Does Mexico have anywhere near the emmissions requirements that even the most lax states here have? (And if they did, is there any chance in h*ll they would ever be enforceable?)
I know a lot of cars are sold at auction, and after natural disasters such as Katrina, Rita, Allison, etc. I know a lot of cars would be totaled and sold for salvage.
My concern is 1) Mexico has a huge and growing population, and 2) no matter what we do here in the way of emmissions testing and refinement of emmissions controlling devices on our new vehicles, if Mexico (and what other 3rd world, backwards, impoverished countries there are in the world) suddenly has an explosion of automobile-driving citizens over what it has had up to this point (and believe me - it is happening FAST), what chance do we have of ever being a custodian of greenhouse gases?
I can just see it all now - flood cars from the states which have all of the electrics washed out - power windows and locks inoperative (who cares down there? they are going to get broken in to and/or stolen anyway, right? Who needs carpeted floors in an automobile when the windows will not go up/down or remain broken out?), all of whatever pollution controlling devices removed, etc.
Is this a valid concern?
I do not mean to offend anyone by their race or nationality, but I am concerned about OUR world environment. It IS the only one we have.
(And it's not like we see caravan after caravan of used cars being towed into the U.S.A..) There has to be consequences.....
They come north across the border as new vehicles, and wind up south of the border again before they die. Ironic.

With the risk of being unPC, I must point out a few economic realities.
1. Autos per capita is a measure of economic growth and wealth, ie, economically advancing nations drive more autos and abandon mass transit.
2. Only wealthy nations can afford the luxury of cleaning and maintaining the environment. Wealthy nations are the only societies that ever have. So, if Mexico is getting weathier that is a good sign for the environment.
I am all for clean air and water, but so far I',m not buying that man is causing global warming as our greenhouse gas emissions are miniscual compared to nature's. FYI, have you heard, the surface of Mars is heating up and it's poles are melting. Could it be that the scientist that suggest the Sun's activities have more to do with global warming that anything Man could do are right.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Let's try and experiment: Lock yourself in a garage with a running car, I'll lock myself in a garage with a bunch of plants. We'll compare notes 24hrs later.
Of course, if a volcano happens to erupt in my locked garage, then I'll be screwed.

Yeah?! Well while YOU TWO are sitting in your respective garages, I'll be sittin' in mine waiting for that asteroid to hit it!!!
(must'a been that trip to the beautiful and newly refurbished Griffith Park Observatory and Planetarium in L.A. the wife and I went to yesterday talkin' there...I'm tellin' ya, the next time anybody here comes to L.A., THIS has GOT to be a stop on your itinerary...VERY COOL!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

They buy them at auction and take them to Laredo where they somehow get over the border after a few people get greased. Often they come back to us as salvage cars.
Ya see, if you take a salvage car down, take the nasty sheet metal and interior out. Put the sheet metal and interior from a stolen car you took to Mexico on it then you can bring it back to the auction and get more money for it.
Yeah, its the result of NAFTA along with GM making 40 plants in Mexico while Toyota becomes the #1 auto manufacturer in America with American workers. Cool huh.
Generally the towing vehicle has not one bit of insurance on it either. ----------------------
So the experiment shows? Carbon monoxide will kill you I suppose. When are you going to do the warming experiment? Will he get real hot before he dies?
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

Yes, I have read those articles. It is just more proof that we have been so careless with our enviroment it is affecting the climate on other planets :P actaully it just enforces my persona opinion that there is nothing that humans have done to create global warming and nothing we can do to stop it, although there is no reason to try and stop it

I would not worry too much about those cars going to Mexico, They will most likely all be back in few months loaded with drugs and illeagals. Btw the world will end in 2012 so why worry about anything
The percentage you're paying is too high-priced
While you're living beyond all your means
And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams

Ahh, the Myan Calender. The facts speak for themselves. Five years left before we are all Doomed. We will be just another of many previous civilisations that have perished. What makes us any different from them? Certainly not technology, it makes us more vunurable. Have a nice day!
