while installing the chrome clutch cable holder the bolt on the right let go at just past finger tight (honest!!). i let it go at just holding on. now i have a weeping leak. i double checked tonight and when i took the bolt out it had a nice wrap of what appeared to be aluminum block on it. does anyone have an idea as to what i can do aside from a disassembly and retap to get this bolt tight? "helicoil" keeps popping in my head but i'm not sure what size or even if that's correct.

You have my sympathy. Stripped threads in aluminum is a real PIA. If the bolt threads are full of aluminum, a retap is out of the question, there's no meat left to retap.
A helicoil will require removing the side cover. Then you have to make sure there's enough metal there to allow a helicoil. There are some liquid metal/epoxy materials on the market, but you have to squeeze them in there while allowing the air to gat out, then after they dry, drill and tap them back to original. I haven't used any for this purpose so I'm not familiar. Hopefully someone will come along here with some new improved fix...
If all else fails ask the dealer....

Good luck and sorry I can't be more helpful...

The exact same thing happened to me... same hole.. finger tight.. the whole bit! I replaced the two bolts that hold that bracket on with longer allen head cap screws. No tapping neccessary.

rapidreverend, glad to know it wasn't just me. do you by chance know the size of the bolt you used to correct the situation? i tried the bolt with no bracket and she does bite, so then i ground down the bracket to half thickness but it wasn't thin enough and i don't want to ruin the darn thing.

jethro666, no I don't know the size. Stick a nail in the stripped hole and mark it to determine where the hole bottoms out in the engine case. Compare the marked nail against your stock screw then go to your hardware store and get the longest metric allen head screw you can use without any washers. I think you'll be looking for something that is approximately 5/16 of an inch longer than stock. Hope that helps you.

Jeff, starter drive idler gear question

Ryan7771 had the same problem.
Quote:

I think I have my clutch cover issue licked. The holes are deeper than the damage. Looks like longer bolts will work (knock on aluminum).

However, the longer bolts in his case did not work. Pun intended. He had to remove the RH cover and helicoil the holes. The above link talks about the idler gear shaft being loose and possibly falling out when you remove the RH cover. You will need to order the gasket (get two as they are cheap and having one in your stock is handy) a helicoil repair kit and some new bolts. ALSO before re-install, remove all the loose chrome that you will observe flaking off the mating surfaces and some other areas on the inside of the cover.

Maybe Ryan will chime in on this as he just got it fixed up.

Well Jeff,
Looks like you are a candidate for the next big bore kit.
I mean, you stripped a thread - might as well jump into something bigger.
