I don't like the look of the long Sceptre's. How about those 19" rask or 13" J.C. Whitney shorties? Are they stupid loud? like running straight pipes, or are they just plain ol fun?

I have some of these. the JCW are pretty restrictive. Call KhromeWerks and buy a set of 19" tapers from the factory outlet. They are currently $20 a set. Stock they are loud. Pry the baffle up (not out) and they are stupidloud.

My fishtails before I added the extra baffle are pretty darn loud. They are still quite a bit louder than most other pipes. They sound good, but are loud.

I have the 16" JCW shorties, and they're nice and loud. They have a small taper in the last 3" which I think looks better than the 13s.
The only time I had a problem with Johnny Law was with a 1st-2nd-3rd gear WFO blast up and over a bridge. The deputy suggested I switch the pipes back but didn't give me a ticket.
As long as you take it easy with the throttle and shortshift, there is no problem. They are about as loud as the stock headers with no mufflers and cotton balls in your ears. Does that help? O yeah, $33 per muffler.

I'm going to try the 16" shorties with the tapered ends, for $33/pc. before I spend the money for the D&D's. Thank everyone.

JCWhitney part #ZX028539X. They just clamp onto the end of the header, the included brackets are not necessary. They are a helll of a lot lighter than stock.

Loudness without a deep, throaty quality to the sound is not what you want. You want Bubs Slashcuts. Perfect length, look and sound. Chrome looks better than stainless and these don't turn colors. I've heard them all except for Thunderbike pipes. Bubs sound better than any of them. Loud, but not the loudest. But a real deep quality sound. NO, I don't work for Bubs.

I ran my 30" fishtail as straight drag pipes for a while. They are the king of loud. I don't know how it is possible, but I fired it up with open headers and the fishtails were still louder!

D&D's are as load as sceptres, but sound crisper more like a drag bike. I love the look of them also with the aluminium cone end.

The pipes I gut are loud and throaty I can't imagine being any louder and they do still have a deep note.
Soren , did you get that baffle job done we talked about then? How's the sound now?

I already have to wear ear plugs so I can hear after riding with my Specialty Spares. I don't even want to think about anything louder. (Just had to get a "mine's bigger" comment in)

Angelis,
I didn't think the Epcos were that loud unless you got on them, say passing someone? They seem fairly docile puttering around town. Could be wrong....I never heard them where I wasn't riding. Could be time for a return to the stockers

I took an hour long ride once with no mufflers, just the open headers. The sound level when I rode through the US1 tunnel in Fort Lauderdale actually hurt my chest! I think that's what you call too loud!

Go with the 16" JC Whitney Shorties, they sound identical to D&D's and are ALOT cheaper............

Try this experiment. Take off your aftermarket pipes, put the stockers back on, and go for a ride in heavy traffic. See how many more didn't-see-you 'incidents' you have.

Okay, I will get rid of my TOR, wait to see which pipes are voted the loudest, get some hearing protection and set about saving lives - just like the Harley boys do. I feel enlightened. Maybe I can be like the ahole that rides by on his Harley on the way to work every morning and wakes up the neighborhood at 6:30 sharp! The foregoing was brought to you BTW, by someone who has had the loudest available pipes on his last three bikes (the one before those was actually rideable sans hearing protection - I ran some nice mellow SuperTraps on that one). I'm surprised that extremely loud exhausts aren't mandated by DOT - you should enlighten them also. Oh, BTW, the left turner that just took you out could not hear your exhaust blasting out the rear of your machine as he hurtled towards you with his radio blasting (not that he could with his radio off), and talking on his cell phone. Finally, I know it is urban myth, but I hear that the loudness of a guy's exhaust is inversely proportional to the size of his..... Mine is a monster BTW.

So that's where your rant button is, huh? Whatever you do, don't try the experiment, it's hard to do on a high horse, being a smartasss is much cooler. Maybe it was funnier before editing.

Well, being the self appointed judge of motorcycle saftey (undoubtedly you are a certified MSF insturctor) AND a critic of comedic writing, I bow to your expertise. Now go out and save some more lives down there in South Florida. Perhaps you're just a wannabe Harley owner!

I'm running puny short TORs. I'm not lacking anything I would feel the need to compensate for (never mind that I'm switching to D&Ds this summer - Um, whoops). And BTW, I'm always cranky...

It's interesting how we evolve. I have always loved D&Ds, and they were often my favs for various motorcycles. I am really enjoying my TOR shorties - they are certainly not quiet, but not obnoxiously loud to civilians. The last time I had a quiet exhaust system is when I rode a police bike in good old sunny California.
Did I mention, the last time I had a bike that didn't burble and pop on deceleration (prior to this beauty) was my 1989 HD Low Rider Custom. Those SuperTraps were sweet (albeit at the time I thought a bit too quiet), and tuneable.

I'd love to get a couple SuperTrapps, but the price of admission is a little steep. I haven't heard the D&Ds yet. I got them used/cheap off evilBay. Hopefully by next weekend.

After what I've read about them here I figured I might have to repack the baffles to quiet them down a bit. But I like a gnarly aggressive sound.

This thread started with a simple question about an exhaust choice. You had to jump in with your smartasss comments. When I suggested you try it and see, you flew off the handle again. I am not a "saftey insturctor", but I have gone from loud pipes to quiet on consecutive days and noticed the change in awareness of the car drivers. And calling me a wannabe Harley owner, oooh, I am cut to the quick, may never recover.
