If they quoted the number of deaths per some number of crashes, it might mean something. On the other hand, comparing the number of deaths per year without giving any consideration to number of crashes, number of trips, etc. it seems that driving is 50X more dangerous than flying.
Another bit of trivia to play with, the FAA has very strict regulations concerning inspection intervals, wear limits, minimum equipment requirements and such yet, the percentage of aircraft accidents caused by mechanical failure is identical to the number of traffic accidents caused by mechanical failure.
