There's the spray stuff that's used for mag flux testing that exposes cracks - BUT - You DON'T want to use that on any surface that shows. You'll have to tear it down and work the insides. It's been a long time but seem to recall a colored spray-on (not exactly a 'paint' and then a 'developer' which then exposes cracks/defects. I'm not quite sure that's what your friend is talking about?
If it is - A welding supplies vendor will have it.
