This is just a theory, but have you noticed that the British empire seems to have pretty well fallen apart since they went metric? I'm thinking that converting between inches, feet, yards, rods, chains etc as well as drams, ounces, pounds, quarts, pecks, bushels etc. and trying to make change for 6, 10 and 4 when someone hands you 5 quid, 30 shillings and 2 thripny bits is what kept the Brit minds sharp enough to become a world power.
