My favorite bike is the bobber, always has been. So a couple of years ago I decided to go flat black. Spent a bunch of time and money using a flattening agent and well long story short, never again. From now on I'm going with the rattle can. Flat black means no buffing, no waxing and no way to get rid of those annoying little surface scratches that appear from time to time. My son scratched the he!! out my rear fender recently ( he's fine and his new teeth look great )any way not having much time I sanded said fender and sprayed with flat rattle can about 12 coats, IMO it looks better than the tank and cost a lot less. What I'm looking for is someone with a better idea that is cost effective.

I am with you on the rattle can. There is a stronger harder flat black available at your local John Deer Store. Its called Blitz Black. Its a little bit silkier but looks GREAT!!! I used it on my bike and only took two coats to cover the whole fender. It goes on good and thick too with out running or dripping. I think its around $3 or $4 dollars a can. We buy by the case because we have 3 vehicles that are painted with it.

Robert, a couple of years ago I got sick of looking at the rear peg hangers (silver). Just for a kick I sanded the shiny off of them and shot them with a can of semi-gloss engine paint I had. Anyway.....they almost disappear from sight now. Exact same color and luster as the rear swingarm and frame.

Thanks Mattt, I used putty to cover that awful seam at the bottom of the tank. Sprayed the tank at my brother in laws body shop. The rear fender I sanded with 400, 600, then 1000 grit. wiped with alcohol let dry and started spraying coats of paint. After first three coats, I sanded with the 1000 grit again, and kept spraying. I ended up with a dozen coats. My thought being, since its flat black the thicker I put it on next year I can just sand out any light scratches and spray a couple of light coats to keep the color consistant. I think I'm going to use Bobber's idea and check out the J.D. paints.

With tape around pipe headers, black front forks and smaller front fender, it can be perfect.

I can't be sure but they look like America bars. The black lines appear to be zip ties.

I want mine to look like THAT!!!!! The black painted dash, trees, fork lowers and headlight bucket look great. I don't think I'll be taking off my corbin/backrest to go to a tractor seat, but I absolutely love the look of that bike.
Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should just get used to that fact and relax

Think it would be easy to paint the fork legs or would they need to be stripped? Those look like america bars slightly rolled back with zip ties. Needs internal bar wiring

That bike's (former?) owner was a member here, it's kinda famous LOVE it. Definitely one of the best bobbers around.

I used a 100 grit with en electric sander to sand it down to bare metal. I put around 4 coats of sandable primor ( sanding between coats)and used a 400 grit to smooth out the primor. I then put 2 coats of Blitz black on sanded with 600 grit between coats. Did the same thing with the Tank only I did not sand it down to bare metal. Sanding down the clear coat is good enough (talked to a friend that does body work) MAKE sure all the clear coat is off.

I dont think they are America Bars the angle of the bend is too sharp, dosnt apper to be any curve at all, looks like they where cut and welded perhaps,
But its a down right beutiful bike.
