Kev, where in NJ are you? If the weather is right and lunch is involved, I might even take a ride over and kick tires with you sometime.
Like everyone has said, maintenance is the BIGGEST expense by far. Defintely spend the money on a lift and tools. Just do some searching and asking here before you attempt anything major and you'll be fine. Oh and I hear a shop manual is good too:)
