I really can't take the fake chrome dash of my speedmaster anymore. I was thinking about painting it with a flat black and then doing a poly spray over that. Has anyone done something similar to theirs? If so how scratch resistant did it turn out to be? I am concerned about the amount of use the gas cap see, I don't want to end up with something worse
the gas cap see, I dont want to end up with something worse

thanks for the feedback

I believe one could get good results from a little sanding and then an application or three of Krylon Fusion paint. It's formulated specificaly for adhesion to plastics, and the finish and application process is very user friendly. I used it on the bottom inside of my Memphis shield without sanding first in order to block out some annoying headlight and driving light reflections. 8,000 miles later, no chips or adhesion issues.

A little OT, and perhaps not applicable to console painting - I've used Hammerite brand rattle cans on bare metal. I just wanted to share that the stuff works as promised, and the results come out looking like a hammered / rippled finish. Cool stuff.

If your going with flat black you can use John Deer blitz Black. You won't need a poly spray over it.

Check this thread. Vic painted his blue

I'm unaware if anyone has ever thought of this option -

How do you guys think a flat black console would look on a black/silver tank?

I'm pretty sure anything that comes out of a rattle can will not hold up to any gas contact at all (no hardener) I spent a hundred bucks on that high dollar multishade paint a few years back on my boys moped clearcoated and everything, first time he spilled gas on it, it was toast...

That could look very cool. One of my favorite "color" combos on muscle cars is gloss black base with matte black stripes. Better yet, black krinkle paint.

I personally got tired of being blinded by the sun.I went to the local auto parts store.Picked up some high heat engine black paint.Suppose to be resistant to gas and oil.Been on there now for six months.Worked good.I was suppose to give it another coat after a week.It never got done so far.One day I'll squirt it again. They also sell a apaint called hammered paint.Looks all ruff on purpose,I think that might look good also.I don't know how it would hold up to gas though. One note I did not paint the gas cap I left it alone, all shiny. My tank is blue & black.Being the Speedmaster it also came with a tach.I like it alot better than chrome plastic.Good luck.Sorry I don't know how to do the pictures yet. Also I did give it a light sanding with a scotch pad before painting and a good cleaning.

I've had my console painted satin back for about 6 months now. I think it looks pretty sharp.

Sorry for the crappy photo.

I didn't think I would like that but I do. I do very much. Is that a satin finish?

Yep. I think I prefer the satin to the flat black.

Ahhh very good point!! I like that too, I just couldn't picture a good example in my mind. Was stuck on bikes I think some (ahem) Harley's have a similar paint scheme?

Krylon is advertizing a new paint called Fusion. Says it bonds to plastic.

I have seen that my friend that paints says it's BS.

I like the satin too..don't think I would like flat.

IT would be nice if an aftermarket piece was made, to easily replace the one we have. It could come in chrome, silver ( like maybe a machined look ), black, flat black, or satin black, and maybe unfinished for those who what to custom do it. Perhaps a gas cap that would give a custom matched look too.

The only ones I know of are for the Bonnevilles. Nothing that I know of made for our bikes, although that would be very cool.

Brent priced it out a few years ago, it was gonna be mui expensivo. If you have sheet metal skills, go for it

Just remember, it's chrome plated plastic, so it's not like the paint would actually be sticking to bare plastic... Maybe that's the problem people have had?

I painted my dash & gas cap this week. Used Krylon Fusion Satin Black. As soon as I figure out how to post pic with my new Dig camera will show how it came out. The only thing I did to prep the dash was wash it than wipe it down with paint thinner per directions on the can. For the gas cap I used a foam sanding block with fine grit, then wipe with thinner.
I waited about 5min between coats. I think the look is much better than the fake chrome.

G.M. high heat satin black. 2 years now on the cap and console with no adverse affects from a little gas spill now and again.

Which color would match the Jet Black from our bikes best? Satin Black? or is there another color that is closer?

Well the pant is shiney, so the glossier the paint, the closer it will look. I am thinking of a flat or satin for contrasting texture so I don't get it "sorta close" ya know?

i understand what ya mean. i think for my taste i'd like to get it as shiny and "close" as possible. I'd like to leave a crome ring around the gas cap, lights and tacho as well. oh and switch the bolts for some black ones. it's all in the works.

there's so much to do and not enough/time to do it with. =)

I have already done the black to the dash on my speedmaster, the other day I had to tinker some more.I took the fuel cap off and took the scotch pad to it.Took the chrome off somewhat.Put a coat of chrome polish on top of it.It kind of looks like pewter colored now. It's not all shiney and I don't have to worry about paint coming off of it. Also took the scotch pad to the headlight.I like it,not shiney and it kind of looks older, also used chrome polish on it.

Interesting, scotch brite then polish, never thought of that. What grade scotch pad did you use?

I just picked up some scotch-brite pads (course, they were maroon colored) to do the same treatment to all my chrome. I seen it done on an Exile Cycle on Build or Bust. I think it looks ok, and I'm a little too lazy to buff my chrome all the time.
