any body know how to make these louder? at first i thought they were too loud... now i just want them to cover that screaming noise from the engine. i hear alot of talk about "removing baffles" and "shorties". but i'm a newbie - don't really know what that is or means.
as always, thanks for any advice and convo.

Take the allen head bolt out and slide the baffle out. It should be about 12 inch long. You can cut the packing off to tune to you liking.I cut about half off.

I'm not sure if there IS anything at the end of the pipe. being at work and without the bike, I can't say for sure. I've looked at them and in them several times but am clueless about any baffles that are in them.
sliding the baffle otu and cutting it will make them even louder than they already are?

your baffles may be difficult to "see" as most think of them as a wall blocking the path...these will be a hollow tube inside the pipe...it will look something like this... clicky when you remove the bolt on the out side of the pipe...they should slide out toward the rear of the pipe...you will find them wrapped in fiberglass batting...

would hate to get it wrong and screw something up. i'm notorious for screwing things up.
thanks for your help.

no baffles sounds too "tinny" in my opinion.

How about, thin, hollow, and metallic? Roll them all into one term, and you get "tinny". Well, maybe not exactly! Ready for the weekend!

so i think i've put it all together.
the more batting you cut off of the baffles the louder the sound.

And we haven't even discussed the loss of back pressure from open pipes!!!!!!

Take a flashlight and shine in the back. You will see a bar run though the outlet of baffle. Fish a heavy gauge wire or clothes hanger with a hook on the end. hook the bar and pull it out.

they won't come out for sh*t. they are close enough to the end of the pipe that i could grab the bar with a pair of pliers. they just won't come out. i'd hate to have to pull the pipe off.

Yeah they are a real pain to get out (at least in my case). I used pliers to pull and twist but the real trick was the broom handle through the header end and sledge (serious) hammer. I took mine out so I could wrap some more baffling on.

update:
so i took the pipes off and used the broomstick/hammer method to get the baffles out. For fun, i put the empty pipes back on the bike and took it for a spin around the block. i definately understand what the "tinny" description is now.
my question now is, when cutting the batting, do i "shave" it off or is it fine to cut it say in half and have the bare metal showing? i'm assuming it would fine to pull off a chunk of it.

Rap a 2 inch masking tape around the baffle.Use a utility knife and cut the packing ,leave the masking tape on and you'r done.

out and about again, this time with baffles out. um... can we say "holy sh*t"? ok, everyone in unison....
the best part about it was f-ing with the idiots on cell phones when we're parked at red lights.
though it was fun, it's a little too loud and abnoxious for me. gonna cut most of the batting off and shove the baffles back in this weekend. i like the sound of them at speed, but they're idling much too high. Definately not an overnight fix.

Yeah, no baffles is a great way to alienate yourself from your neighbors, relatives etc. I removed about 25% of my packing. I used some wire screen from Lowes to wrap around the remaining material and keep it in place. Someone a long time ago discovered once you remove some material, it all gets blown down to the end of the baffle. Something like chicken wire (very large gauge screen material). I'm sure you already discovered getting the screw hole lined back up is the hardest part.

i'd love to cut about half of the packing off. i noticed when i banged them out that they were wrapped with wide masking tape. i suppose the dealership did that. i'll be putting those baffles back in this weekend.
the open pipes are a little too loud at idle for me.

The factory uses tape to hold the baffle material in place. I took mine out once just to see what it was like - way too loud for me. As they get older the baffle material "settles in" and they get louder. I really like the lower frequency sound they make. The more baffle you remove, it seems the higher frequency (tinnier) sound goes up proportionately more than the low.
I'm at the point now to where I may add a layer of baffle to take the tinnier sound down a bit. Overall, I think a new set of Specialty Spares sound the best of any I've heard on the Triumph. They're not the loudest out there, but they do allow the engine to breathe and function as it should while sounding great.
You can always put new baffle back in and recreate the original sound at any time. Like Al said, getting the screws back in is definitely the hardest part. Be sure to get 4-stroke baffle (available at most bike shops) if you replace any.
