I had a carpal tunnel op when I was in the army. it was due to writing and typing morse code at really high speeds believe it or not in the 70's for hours on end. I was told that with the overuse, all the lubricant dries up therefore I would wake up and couldn't move my fingers etc.All they did was open up the wrist and make a small cut in the shroud that contains all the ligaments. Fixed it like that and haven't had a problem since.
