Here, oneijack, - feast your eyes on my Speedy one week before I wrecked it. 904cc, British Customs race cams, Staintune slash-cuts, Five-angle head-job (ported/polished), various powdercoated frame parts + swingarm, Progressive 440 series shocks, "The Freak" installed, 155 main jets, and on and on and on. Then (sigh) - the dog. -BT

One more thing, not only is it an absolutley terrific looking bike that he put a ton of great work into it, but he rides it too. And not only does he ride it, he rides like the wind. It's tough to keep up with him.

Soren, Can you call my wife and tell her what a great guy I am? Pretty please? Oh yeah, one of the very last things I did to my Speedy was... ... these guages. And all that stuff I still possess, and there is no reason why they won't work again. -BT

Did you take out your oil pressure gauge when you went down?

The_Dog33, No, I laid it over on the left side. I destroyed the shift rod, gas tank, bent the peg-mount, broke-off one of my $200 turn-signal mirrors, smashed the headight housing, destroyed the Speedo housing, scratched the Staintune slashcut pipe (left side), scraped the 440 series shock (left side), broke off relocated halogen rear turn signal, the back fender is bent, the welded on rear per-hanger mounting tab broke off, etc, etc. Basically, the thing is trashed - but recoverable. The Corbin saddle was untouched, as was the Kuryakan handgrips (don't ask me how). The motor is perfect still. When I get to it all, it will be a challenge, - but not half the challenge that my current dune-buggy is (see pic below). -BT

Thats a cool buggy I haven't seen one of those since I was a kid I used to play with bugs all the time and beat em to death in the slate quarries. I never gat as fancy as a cool fiberglass body though. Bummer on the bike sounds like a project. Can't understand with all the damage you told me about how the grip the seat and the engine side cover made it through!! What you did say though is quite a bit of change down the tubes. I feel for ya!

Oh, man. An IRS VW rear suspension. I'm getting nostalgic.
Glad to see you've made a lot of progress on that project.

I used to like the older version with no CV at the hub. I didn't break those as easily.

There are more parts to break with the IRS setup, but I think the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Better suspension geometry and tire wear on-road, less chance of rolling the car off-road.

yeah true but I never used mine on the road except to get to the quarry and wasn't legal to do so. I used to come off the top of 10' to 15' hills and land at the bottom and the IRS would just crumble.Remember not in sand in the slate quarries.

The_Dog33,
Well, I've learned a lot over the last year+ about would I should and shouldn't use. I'm not an expert, - but I've spoken with folks who are, and they say to use the link-pin front end (older bug style, not ball-joints) with an IRS rear-end using a Bus "6-rib" transaxle (from a 78 transporter), Bus CV-Joints, and a Type 4 motor w/Porsche 914 2 liter heads.
So I did as I was told.
