I always use a seatbelt, and did before it was the law. The reason is that the probability that it will do good far outweighs the chance that it will do harm.

As for helmets, studies cited by ABATE, NCOM, MMA and others who have little to gain by slanting the statistics show that there is a slight, but real, chance that wearing a helmet will do more harm than good in an accident. Couple this with other studies that show an increase in the chance of being in an accident and the odds are somewhat in favour of not wearing one.
