Bud:

You pose a very valid question which deserves responsible replies. I do subscribe to personal choice, and generally feel the less government intervention, the better. That being said, personally - I ALWAYS wear my helmet (I always use my seatbelt; I always wear my vest to work; I always look both ways before crossing the street too!)

I have been riding for almost 40 yrs. & have gone down twice (about 30 yrs.ago - both were my fault.) My helmet definitely prevented serious injury one of those times. I have been very close to cashing in my chips a few times, so at this point in my life, everyday I wake up is sort of like hitting the lottery. I enjoy riding way too much to take (IMHO) unnecessary chances.

Here in Florida, helmets are optional (with mandatory medical insurance); I still wear one even though it is hot and can be uncomfortable. To me, it's well worth it.
I do have to admit that I do shake my head when I see a helmetless rider - wearing shorts, T-shirt, and sneakers!

But again, to each his own.

Palmer
