The tank is a "custom" tank from Triumph. I believe the scheme is ghost flames or something like that. I haven't looked in the accessories section of their website for a while but you may be able to find it there if they still offer it. Those paint kits aren't cheap.

Rip off is more like it. I believe they go for just North of $800. I can find a starving air brush artist in my area for far less money!

at some of these events (not sure about RAT events) Like I normally go to there are usually pin stripers there that will do a simple flame job like that for $10 to $15 its a very simple pin stripe type flame nothing complicated. Might wanna give your tank a shot of clear when ya get home to protect it though.

the one from triumph is clearcoated over which will make it last much longer than simply pinstrip over existing paint

Yeah but is clear coat worth the $700 or $800 triumph wants? I say get a $10 pinstripe job and have it clear coated for another few bucks. Even if the local paint shop wants $75 to shoot it with some clear you are still $600 to $700 ahead of the game.

Lets go one step farther have your tank repainted do the pin stripe flames and clear coated at a paint shop at the most you should be looking at $200 probably get your fenders to match at slightly more. Most guys will do the fenders for slightly more since the paint will already be mixed up.

OK it's not my bike, but I have just ordered the Triumph flame tank job thing, and yes it is expensive. But the kit (the part number on the Triumph site) is the tank, new heat shields for under the tank, new seals for the fuel tap and a new front fender. I just figured that by the time I got another tank of ebay, got any dents taken out, sanded it down and prepared it for the paint job and then paid for the paint job, I'd end up paying the same as just buying the tank. So I've ordered just the tank. I think the fender with it looks too much. That and it matches my helmet...

Seems to me when you add in a new tank and fender it's not really that expensive. Can one find a better deal on E-Bay or something similar, maybe, but then you still have to get any dents/body work done and repainted. All in what one wants to do. I have been thinking about the kit also, I would have an extra tank (in good shape) to play with. I have some ideas for make a bit larger tank (need more gas on "Touring" trips)

I still think it's WAY expensive!!! She is right about all the time and hassle involved. But all the customs I have built the new bare metal tanks cost right around $100 some more many less. Then having them painted varied greatly but none of the paint jobs were even close to the $700 or $800 Triumph wants. Not saying she made the wrong move due to the fact she needs the origonal tank and it only comes painted. But as far as Triumph goes they are WAY WAY over priced. I get after market fenders for $20 to $50 so even if you figure in the fender it's still over priced by ALOT! I like the looks of them though buy simply can't justify the cost for myself personally.

Just a Triumph emblem on your tank is pretty much what you will ever need to stand out from the rest. Remember, it's a trump.

I'm hope'n we can hook up when Martin, and I, are in your neck of the woods on the way to the GA Rally. It'd be cool to have a "local" show us some nice roads to ride. We're gonna be staying at the Cabins at Nantahalla for a couple of days, and would sure like to meet ya.

You could do most of the prep yourself. Sanding, primer and such. Send it out to get painted off the bike and it would be cheaper. You'd save alot in labor.
Sand off clear coat with medium grit, Use a 400 grit to smooth out the deep grooves. Buy a rattle can of sandable primor and some 600 grit. Paint, sand, paint, sand until you get it right. Make sure the primor is dry to avoid gumming. If your gonna do your front fender remember it is plastic and is prone to deep scratches.

There is a body shop on the otehr side of town that does a lot of flame work (nicely done too), I took the bike in to get a quote on getting the tank, fenders and the side cover shot and then do flames only on the tank. The quote was $1500.

That seems like too much Soren. I painted mine myself and it pretty much cost me nothing. My buddy did the pinstriping on my rear fender.
It would take a good paint shop an hour to spray a tank and 2 fenders. I figure $150.00 for labor and supplies. The airbrushing would likely cost around $200.00 alone.

Actually, I dont think their bid was too far off. That was for them to do all the prep work as well. The current shop rates around here are about $125 an hour. So there is: Wax/grease removal wipedown (before sanding) Wet sand all parts except side cover with 400 then 800 Sand side cover with 220 to get through the clear to remove the decal Removing that Speedmaster decal on the side cover Wax/grease removal wipedown on the side cover prime the side cover, Wet sand the side cover with 400 then 800 Wax/grease removal wipedown of all parts (just cant use enough Prepsol) Shoot two coats of base Mask flames Shoot flames shoot clear All in all if done right, looking at about 8 hours of labor.
If I still had my guns and a place to work on it, I would do it myself (I spent almost 20 years painting). I figure in material alone it might be a couple hundered bucks (two colors of basecoat, clear, catalyst, reducer, making tape, paper, sand paper, etc.).
But, I am talking about a complete color change, not just doing flames.

There si a big price dif in pin stripe flame like we have been talking about and actual flame paint job. Depending what kind of flame you were talking about $1500 is still pretty steep.Unless it is a complicated job like the realistic flames that seem to be popular these days. That is time consuming and to have all the tins done I could see the cost.
Didn't read the 2nd post.$125!!!!! Thats steep I thought the $65 or $70 here was bad!! It's the labor that gets you every time. I wish I could paint. Thats one thing I never learned to do. I know the prep part but mixing and spraying I know 0 about. I always painted out of a foo foo can. I got a good looking job cause it's all in prep and buffing but it isn't durable.
