I have been reading quite a bit about the debate on rallies and should they be family affairs or adults only. I can remember back in the 70’s and 80’s they would not allow you into the camping grounds if you were not 18. Personally I feel that children should not be allowed in this environment for the following reasons.

1. The amount of alcohol being consumed cannot give them a very good impression of what it is all about.
2. The safety aspect, as we know the bikers start getting a bit wild on there bikes at times.
3. The adult content that normally takes place at these venues.

Now at the Buffalo rally that I attended a few weeks back this was really brought to my attention as a friend of mine had his son there, I think he is around 8 or so. Most of the time it was a case of trying to steer the young boy away from the more adult activities that would just popup out of nowhere.

I agree, last year at the Farmyard there were two blokes riding naked on a bike round the site. Even though you could not see any of their bits, it was no place for kids.

Some are intended to be family activities. If the info does not specifically say that it is a family outing, people should not try to make it so. On the other hand, if it does, people should make an effort to keep it "G" rated.

I've been to Laconia and Daytona a couple times. Neither one is appropriate for children. Too much adult content going on but I always see small kids at these events. What are these parents thinking?

it's the same mentality that wants to monitor my tv. the parents want the tv to babysit their kids. it's not the rest of the worlds job to protect your children. you have to step up and be a parent. a rally is a good thing. access where your at and do the right thing. be a adult!

Kids should stay home and play in the street anyway.

I used to go up to Laconia back in the 70s. Before they turned it into NASCAR world with the new track. Back then it was not a place to bring your kids, or even your wife.
Rally organizers should advise if its a family event.

Ok here’s MY take

Be a parent...period...

If you choose to take then be prepared to explain...

WHY are we so infatuated/horrified by sexually explicit material...or anything that has to do with nakedness...

Very few things get under my skin like this simple fact....
I can turn on the Discovery Channel and watch a VERY graphic blood-guts-knives SURGERY of a BREAST AUGMENTATION but they feel that I'm not capable of handling the site of a nipple...

So what is this "adult content" you speak of...I mean are people Fkin in the streets...are BJ's Rampant on every corner...or are we talking wet t-shirt contests and the classic "show us your ti-s" drive by...

Because it speaks VOLUMES about our culture that thinks "bang bang hackem slashem" video games that depict violence against woman, cops, and others are the best sellers and number in the hundreds, yet I'm incapable of spying a naked nipple...I can watch CSI and have them graphically recreate a shooting victims last moment...complete with sound effects and an "internal view" of the bullet reeking its harm...but I can't handle a guys wanker flashing across the screen...show me the stab wound before, during, and after it takes place....but DO NOT SHOW ME PUBIC HAIR I could be scared for life...

Take me to "Real Trauma in the ER" show me that 6 year old who got his arm stuck in a meat grinder...be sure to zoom in on the bone/tissue fragments sitting on the gurney next to him...but please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD don't let me see a butt crack...

What a bunch of Fkin hypocrites...
Sex sells product every day...Victoria’s Secret, sh!t we even got Viagra and Cialis adds telling us about the dangers of a 4 hour errection...yet we can't discuss sex openly

So perhaps those who did bring their children to the rally are just more open and comfortable in discussing the "adult content" than some others...perhaps their just oblivious, and demonstrating poor judgment...

Perhaps their children are mature, well informed, educated, well adjusted, children who are eekk say it aint so aware that there's nothing wrong/dirty/traumatizing with the naked human body and on occasion they might see one...

Perhaps it bothers us to think of the "innocent children" being exposed to this "dirty behavior" because WE were taught it's wrong...but they are neither affected or offended because they were taught that nudity is natural...but "popin a cap in your buddy cause he bogarted you PS2" is wrong!

All too many times people bring their kids to adult-oriented events then expect everyone to tone things down for their kids. Makes me want to punch them in the head.

Well pretty much everything has been toned down lately.
The Nascar race in Loudon used to be crazy, now they charge a camping fee, and hire a ton of cops. Now its just people with money and fancy campers. Same with bike week in Laconia, used to be crazy, now its just big money bikes and crowds.

My buddy went to Laconia last year and left after one night of camping. To say there was a "bad element" there would be an understatement. I'm not into these big monster bike events. Just look at the annual death toll at Daytona Bike Week.

Myrtle Beach Bike week has it all. You can hang out at the
"Biker Bars" and watch boobs & butts. If you bring the kids
there is lots to do away from the bike crowd.
You just have to plan ahead. I would never bring my kids to a place like The Rats Hole, but I had a great time there last year. If you bring your kids to places were girls are flashing their T***, and alcohol is being consumed in great quantities you have no right to be upset.

Well I think maybe you have hit the nail on the head here. Personally as far as the nudity goes I don’t actually care but then you have those that will have a fit because there are children around. Like my case in point my buddy had his kid there and spent most of the time trying to avoid anything that was out of place so to speak.

I have seen it all at rallies so nothing surprises me but as has been said things are getting so toned down nowadays that it has become a commercial event not a rally as I knew it.

So with this said I still feel kids should not be allowed at these events, period. I felt obligated to sort of steer away from certain places during the rally out of respect for my mate and his kid.

There is something to be said about being apart of it as a child. My parents were hippies and took us to concerts all the time. I saw some crazy stuff as a kid. your children will grow up and make better decisions if you don't shelter them from the real world. teach them there is a time and place for everything.

We would pick and choose what events and what time we would go with our kids. I believe that exposure with healthy discussions about what took place gives them a much better understanding of the real world. Since they've grown, we have had conversations about this, and they agree about having a more realistic view of people than friends they know. Our friends would take their young 8-13 year old daughter to biker events and felt safer with her there than letting her walk to school. Most folks at the events we attended had no problem telling your kids that they're being a pest, while at the same time watching out for them. I'd not want to witness what would happen to and individual caught at a bike rally trying to subvert some child!

later, Tom.

Last year camped at Barber in Birmingham Alabama for the vintage races. Was struck by the civility of the crowd. Not like a HD event at all (not that I don't enjoy that sort of thing). Going to the Superbike races there in a couple of weeks, it will be interesting to see the difference.

Now about the safety not sure about your side but we see a large number of these kids screaming around on these mini bikes. I saw on a number of occasions when they were nearly wiped out by some biker doing his stuff. So now, you wipe one of these kids out and then what. Other are screaming around on quads hitting up dirt and stones into the bikes parked around the campsite.

I'm usually the drunk guy playin with the kids. Sometimes they can be more fun. I get them all rialed up then send them back to torment their parents. haAHAAA! Many of my friend have kids and they are always taking them to cool stuff. sometimes the kids are better behaved than the "adults".

Well, let me say at this time that the Prescott AZ "Southwest Triumph Fest"(which runs this coming May 17th thru the 21st, BTW) will have PLENTY of rides and attractions for the little kiddies who'll show up with their parents!

As we speak, I'm currently on the phone talking to this dude who rents out those big inflatable things that look like a castle and that sit in your yard, so that the little kiddies who'll show up for this rally will be able to jump up and down inside to their little heart's content.

NOT!!!

(okay...I admit it...this was just an excuse to offer a shameless plug to all you knuckleheads out there!!!)

Sorry..."Waterboy"!

You'll be much too busy jumpin' up and runnin' to the 'frig and the coolers retrieving the next rounds for the rest of us(that is, when we're not all out on the bikes riding around some of the best roads in the Grand Canyon State) to have any time left for any such frivolity!

I'm a very liberal woman, pretty liberal as a mother of my daughter as well, but I've never been a fan of seeing kids at clearly adult bike venues. We all know where and when they are....There's a difference between bringing kids to a fairly mild Saturday swap meet and bringing them to Main St. Saturday night at Wiers Beach or Daytona or to the 'Vous, or to some of the hard partying campgrounds.....I don't allow my 14 year old daughter to see highly sexualized or crazy intense violence R rated movies yet, or hang out where adults are partying hearty, so why would I let her see public pole dancing at a bike event?(I mean really, some men just don't have it.)
It's not about trying to hide reality from my child. (That's impossible anyway.) It's about supporting her and guiding her in a world that tries to grow kids up too quickly already.

We try to steer our kids right too. Do as I say not as I do kinda thing!! We are very lucky with our 13 yr old. Gifted in school, Cheerleader, responsibile (for a 13 yr old! LOL) and so darn honest she will look me right in the eye and tell me she did something knowing the hammer is gonna fall!! Tells us when she gets in trouble in school before the school does. She actually gets in much less trouble going about it the way she does.

Movie Ratings...please somebody explain this to me....

(R)[but of course, there are little kiddies of all ages including that 10 year old hiding his eyes sitting next to his "older" sister of 17, and somehow their "parents", if they're still together that is, let them go see it ALONE, and somehow they got in ALONE]---In this film seven teenagers are brutally and graphically murdered by a sociopath welding a chain saw.[Wes Craven, you're "such a master of the medium of cinema"]

(NC-17)-[no one under 17 better be in the theater, boy]---In this film two consenting adults reveal their nude bodies, have stylized intercourse, and later discuss their reasons for splitting up.[usually in french(spit) w/english subtitles, of course]

Okay, I don't really need an explanation here. I just wanted to make a sociological observation. I know why it is.....at least I THINK I do!

(BTW...I DON'T advocate EITHER film being seen by children under 17...matter of fact...I don't advocate anybody of ANY AGE seeing EITHER film...they've both been done to death...so to speak...I mean, where's Jimmy Stewart when you need him?)

The movie rating system sometimes does not make sence (other than it is all about money). I have seen some PG and PG-13 movies that should have been R movies and a couple R movies that should have been PG movies (compared to the PG and PG-13 movies that should have been R movies). There are also some PG movies out there that very clean enough that they could have been G movies.

the movie 300 was a adult movie. my personal view is that a child should not be allowed to view it . even with their parents. hence the word PARENT. i was rather liberal with my children. i did not allow them to view any movies with heavy sex. i did allow violence. i was embarassed to have my children view the sex. i turned it off. i have two great adult children.

Any movie that seems like it may be questionable for kids (my son is only 10), and it seems like a movie that he might want to see I will usually try to make sure I see it first. We don't go out to the movies much, we usually get DVDs so that makes previewing movies easier.

I must admit, I did a double-take when I walked into the theater for 300 and saw a coworker with his to (youngish) teenage sons. I don't know if they were truly old enough or if he was just being "the cool dad."

Well..I can't think of a better place for an 8 year old than hanging around a bunch of guys drinking and swearing like longshoremen and their women whipping out the torpedoes. I mean, Hooters is a family place right?
