I'm switching out my BA wheels with a fellow member for his SM wheels - it's becoming an AmericaMaster. I like the look of the SM front fender and also the BA rear fender. Any idea how they look together? Anyone have any pics?

Also, what's your opinion on a black SM fender with the Cardinal Red tank and rear fender? Goofy? I don't think it would look bad but...

Can a dealer repaint the front fender for me? Or are there other "authorized" paint shops that would have the Cardinal Red available?

So many questions.

Thanks Guys!

Matter of fact, Mikemm03 used the speedy front fender on his. He did however paint it to match the cardinal red on the tank. Looks really good, thought about doing it my self or maybe trimming down my extra front fender a bit.

Mark! I'm sure you can paint the fender yourself. If you have a look at my pics you can see the hard bags I fixed for my bike. After lots of "underwork" I went to an auto color shop and told them I needed the Triumph Cardinal Red. They made the paint and filled it into two (had to buy more later) spray cans with a more "professional" nozzle. The Cardinal Red paint is a kind of candy color so first you lay the bottom and then the glittery layers until you get it right. At least I'm happy with the result on my hard bags.
Hope this helps!

I'M INTRIGUED - I just bought the fender!!!

This sounds like fun. I'm sure it's not as easy as it looks on the various "Chopper" shows.

OK, here come the questions...

First off I'll state right off the bat that I have no wrenching or paint experience whatsoever (except for my current project involving wheels, rotors, brakes, handlebars, signals, tach - I'm just diving in)

Did you have prior experience with paint before you tried it?

So what were the steps involved? Sand off the black, under layer, glitter, over layer, clear coat?

What did you use to smooth it out after sanding, paint, etc.?

Did the auto shop help you out with the details?

How much did the paint go for?

Which paint did you need more of?

Thanks piper1

p.s. Everyone else, please feel free to chime in!!!

Mark,

I think they actually call it a BAster. I like the SM fender better as well. I think it has a nicer profile. If there is a diificult part, the paint will be it. But since you will have it off and can do all the prep work, you should be able to find someone to shoot it easily enough. Just enjoy that BAster!

Barry

OK, Mark. I'll try to answer your questions:
Quote:

No, I'm not a painter, but the instructions the paint-guys at the shop gave me were enough. Thin layers, don't hurry and so on...

I guess the fender you got is painted already. To make the new paint stick, you have to rough the surface a bit. I'd recommend a 1500-2500 paper for this. Like I said, the first paint is a ground/bottom color and the you build the paint up with the second one.

They sure did. I guess they deal with quite a lot of Do-It-Yourself-people.

Well. That's the downside. The paint was quite expensive. If I remember correctly each can was about 50USD. You also need a good clearcoat for the final touch and protection.

This one will be no problem for you. Remember I did two bags and I found out I needed another can of the second stuff to get the right shade/darkness.
Please bear with me and feel free to ask more questions. I'm not native in English...

I have the SM fender on my BA go to the Customs Gallery, type in GUSSER. you must fill the 2 top holes that are for the brake line brackets. I had custon paint done so it didnt matter to me, also I bobbed the rear fender and got rid of the big plastic cherry tail light

Hey Gusser, looks good! I have an SM fender on the way myself. So how do you like your switchblade pegs? Did they require an adaptor? I am thinking about getting a set, I really like the idea of a nice clean look of a peg with some heel support and more options for foot placement on long rides.

Nice paint job GUSSER! Where'd you get that done?

Actually I'm switching wheels/rotors too so I won't need to fill in the holes. What I will need is one of those little clamps for the brake line, because the fender I bought is missing that item.
