Noticed in the newspaper the accidents/deaths are increasing with the warm weather and spring here in SW Ohio.
1) Thursday...48yr old man lost control of his "HARLEY" in a curve and hit a tree.
2) Friday...A 53-year-old motorcyclist was killed Friday evening when he tried to pass a Ford van and struck the vehicle. Both vehicles were in the left lane when ... tried to pass the van, police said.
Do people forget how to RIDE over the winter break?? I think so. It is a good reminder for ME to pay attention as the riding season starts. Remind myself about things like counter-steering, watch my speed and don't do STUPID stuff.

In my formative years, the first 40, I lived up north. The number 1 killer then was sand from the salt and sand trucks. A few dozen folks later and a few weeks for it to migrate to the shoulder all as good again.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

The roads are pretty clean now but there is still some sand & gravel residue. You'll see it generally near the lines, and center of the lane, and at intersections. These are the spots where cars are going the slowest and don't force the junk off the roads. We'll need a bit more spring rain to clean it away. Just yesterday I saw a big heap of salt in the middle of the road. That'll be there for a while.
Sometimes going through a curve you'll see the sun glint off the sand in the road, causing rectum pucker. If all you get is the pucker and not a slipping tire, you're doing OK. Ride safe!

It's a two part answer: Yes, a lot (not all), especially 2nd or 3rd year riders need to remember to take it easy the first few times out to get re-acquainted with their bike. After winter is over, cagers have also forgotten that bikes exist, so are not looking either.

I think definately 2nd and 3rd year riders have alot to do with it. Overconfidence. Still have to chalk some up to stupidity and carelessness. The 2 mentioned above probably not new riders although who knows. It is easy to find yourself in trouble on a curve full of marbles. I always ride more caucously in spring especially on the corners. I also always expect cars to pull out infront of me or cut me off. Keeps me alive.

I think helmet should be a choice especially since I don't want to go back to wearing one again. But how rediculous is it to have it OK to go without a helmet but you can get a ticket for no seatbelt?

First decent day here a week or so ago there was one fatality reported - a 50 something HD rider lost it going around a curve and hit a telephone pole. The paper naturally included their new tag line at the end of the article.
Well you know that if he was wearing a helmet, it would have prevented the accident completely I hate that mentality

Sadly, it seems to be an annual thing up there where winter is more than a period of time on the calender.

Not to change the thread. Here in Florida OK to ride in the back of pickup truck (lot of farm workers going to and from jobs) no seat belt required, but if the people in the cab are not wearing seat belt on a routine traffic stop, yep you guessed it, a Ticket even though five in the back are not belted.

Most of these 50-something Hardley riders do not have any experience. They bought these machines because they didn't have one when they were young, or else they had a 125 or something. If you read the details of these deaths, they are either young crotchrocket riders or 50+ Hardley riders with no experience. OK, thats my rant for the day.......

A momentary blip in your concentration can find you about to rearend an suv, going to fast for a curve, etc. It don't really matter how old you are or how much experience you have.

We had our first meet of the season on Wednesday night, it was a nice evening but with it being on the coast very cold breeze. I left around 8.30pm. The Mrs came home from work on the Thursday afternoon and asked if I new about the crash Wednesday night, just round the corner from the local meet. Apparently a mum (Hilda Birchall) on her own machine was riding home, with her husband in front of her as she came round a corner she hit a car head on and died instantly. I was only talking to her that evening.
Her husband turned up to the Sunday meet at the same place with a reef on his bike and an explanation of why he was on his own..
Also on my ride today, I saw two smash ups both on bends, but don't know if anyone had been hurt.
It's a wicked world we live in, so take care out there everyone

I must be getting old and going sane.....I went out early on Saturday morning and bought my first ever 3/4 helmet with a face shield....Jeez, I quit smoking in Novemeber, haven't had a drink or a drug in 21 years and now after 17 years of riding my own bike I'm done with skid-lids....Of course then I had to take my new helmet out for a test drive and I was surprised to find I actually LIKED it! My major adjustment problem was where to put the big ol' thing when I landed over at my friend's house. I read and hear about all the MC injuries and deaths each spring and I guess I've finally outgrown the mistaken belief of "It can't happen to me".

Too many people with the "Bigger is Better" mentality. That heavy bike is fine in a go-straight situation, but when the curve shows up and they're coming in hot, they don't have the skills to handle it.
Couple of co-workers here just bought new bikes. One bought a 1300 VTX Honda as his first ever bike. He weighs about 130 lbs and complains to me about how hard the bike is to maneuver - but look how cool I am on it! Another guy just dropped $55K on a Big Dog - for his first ever bike. They both probably chuckle when I roll in on my "little bike".
There'll probably be some good deals on used steel in a year or two. We've already got a '99 "one owner" Big Dog on the bulletin board w/ <600 miles on it. The guy's willing to take a $30,000 loss.

Ya know what else ya never hear about helmets? In an accident at 35 mph an average helmet is equivalet to haveing 400lbs on your neck and causes severe neck injuries. So a helmet is a trade off to a certain extent. In some cases it is a life saver in others it causes injuries.Same can be said for seatbelts.

After my wifes neck surgery, this was a real issue for us. Her neurosurgeon refuses to wear anything, but her neurologist will only wear a full-coverage. Always thought that was odd but both expressed your same opinion on low speed vs. high speed injury.
I won't even get started on seatbelt laws.

I have never heard that before about a helmet being a danger to your neck on crashes over 35 mph.
This last Friday we had 51 year guy go head to head with an SUV. He overshot the turn and drifted right into the SUV.

Its not over 35 it changes exponentially. The greater the speed the greater the weight of the helmet is magnified. And the helmet being good or bad depends on the individual accident.

helmet or no helmet? Really when its bad its bad! I've heard it compared to open casket (with helmet), closed casket (no helmet). I have found that I see, hear and react better without one. With a helmet on Its harder to turn your head to look into a blind spot, harder to hear when someone is locking up their brakes and harder to look through a plastic shield.

More pedestrians get killed every year than motorcyclist. Probably because they don't helmets.

I find the opposite to be true. I have no trouble turning my head, or riding all day wearing a full face helmet. Weight is not an issue for me. I see better with it on as there is no wind (or rocks, bugs, etc.) in my eyes. The helmet is not a sound deadening device so I hear just fine, well..... barring the loss from those Zep, Sabbath, etc. concerts back in the day . In fact I wear earplugs when on a long ride for that reason. Make your own choice on whether on not to wear a helmet, if you can. But if you don't want to wear one, just say so. There's really no need to try to rationalize it .

The weight issue doesn't come into play until you have an accident but the vision impairment does. You can't honestly say you see as well with it on as you do off. It simply isn't physicly possible, you lose periferal vision. But it is a chioce and do what makes ya feel good.

Depends on the helmet. I cannot see the edges of my face shield opening (HJC Symax) by turning my eyes all the way to either side. Therefore it cannot affect my peripheral vision. A 3/4" rock in the middle of my forehead, however, could be disastrous. And my helmet has deflected a few of those.

Safer, not safer... it's an endless debate that will never end. The helmet debate should be about freedom of choice.
Unfortunately there was a five year old killed yesterday when she pulled out in the road on her bicycle in front of a truck. Its a very sad incident, she died instantly. On the news this morning the first thing they said was that she was not wesring a helmet. It really frustrates me that they never tell of any accidents when someone is wearig a helmet. They blatently act as if wearing a helmet will prevent an accident. Not prevent injury or death but prevent accidents.

It's a little known fact, but wearing helmets also increases your chances of catching leprosy and the bubonic plague. They should be outlawed!

I couldn't agree more.. there is a road up here called Grout Road.. nice little twistie in the city.. but every year there is a few deaths.. mostly bikes because people race along it.. find the barrier.. and then skid off the road or end up being run over by the next thing coming down the road
I like to take it once in a while.. but rarely after dark as it seems that's when the 'morons' come out to play
just my 2 cents

Sorry to hear about the kid but it seems to me helmet no helmet wouldn't make much difference in that case. It kills me the way they push the helmet thing. When most of us on this forum (I think)were growing up we didn't wear helmets or pads on our knees or elbows. We had bright lead paint on our cribs. We roamed the neighbor hood alone and after dark and our mothers cut chicken up on wooden cutting boards then cut up lettuce for a salad on the same board and we all survived!!

Now if only the helmet could do something about the rocks IN my head!
Like Soren said...it's really a matter of personal choice...I've never ridden with a legal helmet, have always ridden with no helmet in states that permit it....Somehow something has just shifted for me....I have 3 friends that are in treatment for serious cancers....making me think about maximizing my chances for a long life... I picked up the HJC CL-33- didn't go for spending big money in case I absolutely hated it, and I'm finding what Bill of the Rat Fink Avatar said to be true for me- no problem at all with periferal vision.

Having "surfed the highway" at 65mph, I can say for a fact that had I NOT been wearing a helmet I would be unable to regale you with this tale...I live in NH, there is no helmet law here, I wear a helmet...most of the time...SOME times I just feel like "today is'nt my day to die" ...the debate over helmets should NEVER be a debate over the proported safety advantages...this can be easily disputed with facts for either side untill the day the earth grinds to a halt...
Helmet laws should only be debated on freedom of choice period....
Don't sing me a song about added health care expences and the good of all...because untill we stop smokers, well then the government has no right to tell me it's "safer and better for me and J.Q. Public's pocketbook if I wear a helmet...
the fact is the AMA and other motorcycle lobyists just don't have the funding that big tobacco has...
so all of you "helmet laws suck" types get off the weight, vision, hearing, arguments...
they can be easily refuted and make you look foolish...stick with freedom to choose...
it's almost indisputable...
try this next time someone tells you... "you need to wear your helmet because it's safer"
"perhaps your right it might be safer...but as long as this is a free country I'm also free to be an idiot, whether that's by smoking, drinking, playing the lottery, sending my $$$ to questionable televangilists, driving a SUV, not recycling, sking, scuba diving, mountain climbing, having 10 children on a Wal-mart income, or any other of potentialy harmful legal activities and that includes not wearing a helmet."
