I looked in the archives and could not find anything. Does the standard Bonneville gas tank fit on our bike? Simmer probably knows the answer to this (or could try it). Does anyone have one and how does it look. I would be interested in Swaping mine out.

I have a std Bonneville tank (not mounted on the bike) and to do so is posible but would require, IMHO, boo-ko work...the "tab" that bolts to the frame is different (an easy fix) but the big issue (in my mind) is the "dash" there is nothing to recieve it on the std tank...so all of the indicators would need to be relocated...again not impossible at all just more work than I want to do...

The oil pressure light would be the only indicator I would need. How is the tab different? Will it Line up? I have access to a drill press. I think it would look cool! Do you wanna sell your tank?

Unfortunatly the tank is spoken for...(trading it for an America tank)

The tab is a two hole (side by side not front to back)

go to www.bikebandit.com and look up the gas tank (in the OEM parts section) for a Bonneville/Scrambler/Truxton (they're all the same) the schematic of parts has a good illistration of the tank and the tab...

As far as fit don't know...

Keep an eye on fleabay. A good looking Speedie tank just sold there for under $100.

I checked and there is no New Bonneville gas tanks on there. I want to see some pics of one so I can get an idea of what needs to be done. Do you know of anyone who has done this mod?

Don't rule out tanks off the other classics either -Thunderbird, TBS, legend, etc...

When I have both my bikes in the same place long enough, I'll pull both tanks and check the differences, take some pics. Could be a while though.

I had looked into that exact thing about a year ago - maybe more. I agree that the standard Bonnie tank would look great, but it would be some work. Apparently the standard tank has a two-holed mounting bracket at the seat end, where ours has a single hole for the bolt. Aside from the expected dimension differences, that's the big thing. If you can weld or fabricate otherwise, I say go for it. I'm sure the indicator lights from the dash would be re-mounted somewhere else easily, and I never cared for the plastic "chrome" dash anyway. Best of luck.

Keep the oily side down.

The tab on the tank is no biggie, just drill a hole in the middle I'd be more worried about the overall length, bar clearance (full lock on the bars), and WIDTH of the slot up the middle!! Gotta fit over the spine of the frame! Also, the front frame mounting tabs under the tank... Not sure.

As for the Tbird, etc. they have a much different layout, check one out from the front...

BTW this has been discussed a few times I'd love to get my hands on a bonnie tank!

Mee too, Just to see if it fits the front mounts and around the frame. Drilling a hole in the tab would be a sinch. I would do this in a second. Anyone have an extra tank laying around? Hmmmm? I have a rear fender and dented gas tank for trade.

i tried it today. the tunnel on the bonnie tank is way too narrow.

the front mounts are too wide, the ignitor and relays have to be moved, and the motor mount bolts are also in the way.

Yes, Thanks dude.
It would be more work than I am willing to do right now. Something to consider for a winter project.

I'd be interested to see how a Tbird tank looks now

I put a stretched billet headlight on my SM and I had to go the other way all the wires in the headlight are now under the tank. It's tight but enough room.

Always a chance. I've found a bunch of Tbird/Legend stuff for sale over at triumphrat.net. I know at least the front of the center tunnel is wider to accomodate the coolant resevoir. The tank has a similar profile to a bonnie tank, AND the offset filler neck!
