My 06 Speedmaster was recently written off and I am haggling over the insurance pay out. They refuse to compensate me for the "extras" they say I did not inform them about. One item was a Triumph alarm. I intend to go to the garage tomorrow and remove all the items they won't cover. One problem - I have no idea how to remove the alarm. I am told it is a plug in unit and I will have to remove the tank to get to it. I have zero mechanical skills so if any one can give me any advice, better still a step by step guide I would really appreciate it. Hoping to get a 07 Speedmaster in the coming weeks depending on how much the tight A**** insurers pay out. Hope some one can help.

Yup.
The connector is under the tank.
Don't know if this is an issue for you, but -
The standard (no alarm) configuration uses a plug with jumpers in it there.
It would be my guess that if the alarm is removed, the bike wouldn't run without that plug in place.

to remove the tank you first remove the seat. Turn off the petcock and use pliers to slacken the spring holding the fuel line on, then remove the fuel line. Remove the single 12mm bolt at the end of the tank (normally hiding under the front of the seat). Lift the rear of the tank slightly and pull it toward the rear of the bike. As it come off you'll need to reach under the right side and disconnect the breather hose. Once it's off locate the alarm, and unplug it. There'll be some sort of bolt etc attaching the actual alarm module to the bike you'll need to undo too.

Tank replacement is a reversal of the above procedure.

Did you not tell them about the alarm?? I would as it takes a load of the insurance. If you did then you have them over a barrel as you've told them about it. With me it didn't matter as I bought her back. And when she's back on the road I'll still need the alarm as I'm too young (just think of insurance costs...)
If the bike is written off then it won't matter if there's no plug to replace it.

And Matt....the console needs to come off if you are taking the tank off...
You'll also need an allan (hex) key, but of the top of my head I don't remember what size...
But if you do take it off, I wouldn't bother reconnecting the tank. Just put it back on, and make it look that it is. The breather pipe can be a right pain to reconnect.
And I have next to no mechanical skills, but I'm learning. I also have a dealer that's very nice to me.... and a dad who is gonna teach me loads in the rebuild.
I don't know if you've realised but never be afraid to ask questions on here. I've asked some really stupid ones in my time, and still do.

Just glad it hasn't completely put you of riding and you are gonna get an 07...

Thanks for all the advice. Managed to locate the alarm. Followed the main wire that goes in to a black box the size of a box of matches. I believe that this is the connecting point. I was unable to get in to it so as the bike is a write off I clipped the wire the bike side of the connector box. Will be delivering it to the Triumph dealer to put on my new black SM next week. Just hope the alarm still works.

Gina - I agree. I believe they should pay for a new one. It was fully comp. insurance and I got discount for having the alarm so they can’t say they didn’t know. I am just making sure that if all fails and they don't pay in full I will at least have the alarm. I am in the process of claiming for the accessories from the car driver, but I am told that this could take some time.

Yeah....but at least you hadn't paid 500 quid for a 12000 mile service the week previously. I had. And I can't claim that back either.

Yep, that's the connector. My alarm's aftermarket and I fitted it by cutting the connector off completely, but it wouldn't surprise me if there's a security feature that makes it damn near impossible to disconnect it. That's why there's a security torx screw in the battery cover - it's not so people won't steal your battery, it's to stop them disabling the alarm and lifting your bike onto a truck.

Oh, and yeah I suppose you could take the console off the tank before you remove it, if you really think it's a good idea to avoid stretching & breaking your wiring.

More "self-deprecation" than "sarcasm" at my own stupidity for forgetting the console
