The goggles on the dogs might seem silly but do remember that dogs' eyes cannot make tears as people's eyes do.
Excessive wind exposure can damage a dogs/cat's eyes. That is one good reason why vets do not recommend letting a dog ride with its head out a car or truck's window.
Also - you do remember the last time a truck tossed up a bit of stone that hit you in the face, right?
