As often as not, the engine stops far enough up the compression stroke that there is enough pressure to push the piston back down, turning the engine backward. This engages the starter over-running clutch, which could be causing your noise. If it is extra loud or gets louder with time, there are a few things that may need to be checked like the cam chain tensioner and the alternator roter.
