I've always been stuck on the Speedmaster with the black engine, but I have seen some nice BA's on this site with the gray engine. So do you SM owners find its hard to keep the black engine clean? Also, after reading another post on here, some of you think the 790 motor does not feel that much different than the 865. What is your opinion about whether the extra cc's are worth it? It would be cheaper to get an earlier model BA than a SM.

I bought my '06 BA (790cc) last year. I let a Yamaha riding friend ride it and about two weeks later he had a new Speedmaster. We both traded off and as far as engine performance we agreed it was hard to tell the difference. My BA is graphite with the gray engine. His Speedmaster is black with the black engine. I really like the look of the blacked out engine on a black bike.

Out of curiousity, which Yamaha model did your friend previously own? What size cc's?

The only part of the Speedmaster I don't like cleaning are between the cooling fins on the motor. Best product I've found for keeping the black looking good is Mothers Back to Black, which you should be able to find at any auto parts store that carries Mothers products.

In this case, I think of gray as being light black. I have a black engine and a gray one, and I find that they are about the same amount of effort to clean, but the black one shows every speck. Living where I do, I'm all for someone coming up with a mud colored bike.

Only have had my 790 SM since November. I’ve heard from several that the 865/790 doesn’t make that much difference, dealers included. I was hoping that I would not be disappointed in its power and so far I am not. If I were truly interested in speed, my SM would most likely not keep me happy. But fortunately I now enjoy cruising and gathering the nice “Sharp Bike†comments.
This is my first black engine bike, but I don't remember any of my other rides being any easier to clean.

Like Ed said - Fins is fins. If I'm taking the time to do a REAL cleaning job, I use a parts washer brush (soft bristle) and lather it up. It works quite well. I've used that method since Moby was a minnow. To brighten it all up, I use the same typeof brush with a light coating of McGwires Vinyl and Rubber stuff. It deepens the black - and puts a semi-gloss shine on it. Be sure to put it on light enough so it doesn'y collect more dirt than you just cleaned off. Some use WD-40 - I think it too messy/oily.

Triumph Incorporated unveiled the Cardinal Red America in 2002 as a "Gold Standard" by which all future models would be measured. During the intervening years they have come out with some notable colour variants and model names (ie Speedmaster). These clones have all claimed some degree of market share and loyal following. The original remains what it is . jh

Silly boys! I'm holding out for one of those fabulous purple Paul Smith Edition models that come with that simply marvelous lavender colored engine.

Sir!!! That is no way to treat a perfectly good motorcycle.
Start it up and ride it, but please. Dont kick it.
If you need to kick something, buy a cat or something.

The only thing that has not changed since the introduction of the 2002 America is the fact that they still come in BLACK

Good idea Phil!
This "color thing"(as usual) COULD BE a rather long drawn-out affair, couldn't it?!
And it WOULD BE rather nice to have some some munchies to chow down on in the interim, wouldn't it?!

I think Brent needs to start selling jaffa cakes. That way I could order some jaffa cakes and get some free chrome goodies.... I can't find anywhere around here that has them.
