I turned my bike on this morning, only to be greeted by one almight bang which blew the side pannel off the bike. I have not tried to start it again as I am not sure if my insurance will cover me for exploding bikes. Anyone got any idea what could of caused it. I have just got my bike back from the dealers last week after being taken out by a`car. I have rode the bike three or four times to work since then and had no problems. But this morning Wow, no problems going to the toilet now.

Did you use any throttle when starting it? Sounds like you blew your airbox!

I did use a bit of throttle as it was a bit frosty this morning and the bike did not start with the turn of the key. I thought it might have blew the air box. But boy was that some bang.

Never use the throttle when starting. Use the choke if needed.
Check your airbox, it may have a crack or bits blown from it.

Have the dealer warranty the work, especially since they just had it.

I guarantee you blew the airbox, mine did the same thing, after using throttle on cold start (insert stupid here). I ended up replacing with Freak kit.

Did you also leave the petcock open. I never start my bike with the fuel on. I wait until the bike has started and then turn the fuel on.

Maybe the first thing Big Poppy warned me about when I got my TBA was to never twist the throttle before starting. Being a dutiful friend, I never questioned his advice and never twisted the throttle but did choke it and did turn on the ignition for a few minutes to let the pre-heaters work, as he also suggested. Your graphic description of what can happen only makes that Big Poppy even larger than life...and a millionaire, too. SteveB

Hmmm, my bike has never been able to start unless I give it a tiny bit of throttle! Even with the choke on, it still needs a teeny weeny bit of throttle. Now I'm really worried!! Mole

It may be as simple as turning your idle up a little.

The first time that happened to me I had just filled the tank and was preparing to leave the gas station. Scared the crap out of me when I felt that explosion just under the family jewels. I shut down the bike and checked not just the bike but you know what I had cracked the airbox but it was covered under warranty. A week or so later I discovered this site and was told "Never crack the throttle." It hasn't happened again in 24,000 miles and almost three years.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Same with me. If it's cold, the bike will not start w/o some throttle. It will just grind and grind until the battery gives out. Angelis keeps telling me I need the "Freak" also, but just haven't had the extra cash.

I agree with Soren. I can dial my idle down to around 800, and it will idle smoothly and sound good, but for hot engine starts, 800 / 850 RPMs is too little fuel for the Triumph twins.
An idle of around 1,000 or 1,100 may sound too high to the ear, but should eliminate the need to add throttle to hot starts.
