I say LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES!!!!!! I live in Salt Lake City and we have a similar noise restriction on the main road thru town. I avoid the area to avoid a run in with the local law.

It becomes a question of "how loud is too loud." From time to time, I think my pipes are loud. Then, I'll go riding with my Harley friends and mine seem quiet. I think it's the people trying for "loud as you can" that cause most of the negative reaction. I live on the water and I can't stand the Cigarette type boats that have 2 or 3 open exhausts - it's ridiculously loud. This is what causes noise
ordinances - a minority that's going too far!

I couldn't agree with you more. Also, I tend to think that loud pipes do save lives, up to a point. In no way does that mean that the louder your bike is the safer you are.

I don't think loud pipes save lives all that much to be honest. A person in a car can't hear your pipes till you just about next to them, so if they don't actually see you, and go to change lanes, you better be skilled.

They can hear ya commin if there at a cross street, but they still have to spot ya. I think a headlight modulator does much more to keeping you safe then loud pipes.

Note, I have extremely loud pipes, and have people change into my lane with me right next to them all the time.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Bob.

I sometimes...err...make that ALL THE TIME wonder what personally flaws some riders possess in their character that causes them "the need to be noticed" THAT MUCH, whenever I hear some Harley rider(and let's face it people...it usually IS the Harley riders out there riding with "open" pipes) who I can hear literally coming more than a mile away, when you'd think anyone with ANY sense at all would be able to figure out that hearin' them coming, umm, let's say a QUARTER of a mile way would be sufficient to quote..."Save their lives", wouldn't ya???

I mean...HELL! As many of you people around here have probably figured out by now, I'M somewhat of an attention-seeking egomaniac myself...BUT, EVEN I know when my antics are disturbing the VAST NUMBER of people around me!!!

(Okay! Yeah, I KNOW! I've just opened myself up for a whole ration o' sh*t after THAT statement, haven't I?!)

Cheers,
Dwight
(hey, and besides...remember: one can't HEAR the written word a friggin' mile away, now can they?!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I think the "Loud Pipes save Lives" arguement is what people claim in order to justify the anti social noise that is coming from their back end.

I hate loud pipes. Which is why i guess i tend to ride alone, in the quietness of my stock Triumph pipes.

Realize its not about being noticed or character. Its about that sound! the 383 stroker in my 29 chev has straight pipes and it sounds AMAZING! I think the people who like the sound of loud pipes are also the ones who love the sound of an dragster at the track or the roar of 20 bikes. Its the sound of power and freedom.

Good point BUT!

Personally, standing on the main straight at the Indianapolis Motorspeedway and hearing a Ferrari V10 F1 engine charging by at 19000 rpm is as good as it gets. But that is at a race track. I expect a race track to be loud.

But sitting on my deck on a lazy sunday afternoon the last thing i want to hear is a bunch of loud bikers roaring by disturbing my afternoon.

Man, i must be getting old

Must be getting old - should be out riding instead of sitting around on the deck.

Cops Crackdown On Excess Noise In Ft. Lauderdale

During the course of the enforcement, officers focused on loud noise coming from motorcycles, motor vehicles, and large trucks.

The enforcement was not just aimed at music, but any loud sounds coming from the vehicle, such as amped up engines.

The police department has worked closely with the city and various homeowners' groups to address this issue.

The department has also utilized the use of electronic message boards to alert drivers of traffic enforcement and noise enforcement along the beach.

Since it's inception over 490 citations have been written for various noise and traffic violations.

The police department will continue addressing the noise violations and traffic issues for the safety of its citizens and visitors.

People who insult the size of a mans penus are actually less endowed than the average man. It is my understanding that the insults tend to justify a need to leave people with the assumption that you are blessed in the crotch.

The wife and I were sitting on the back deck when we hear a bunch of loud bikers roaring by, she looks at me and says "oh go take a look". See to some loud bikes are noise and to others they are muuusic, and I am old

I believe that it was Fort Lauderdale that ran off all the "Spring Breakers" a few years back. Panama City. FL thanks them for that! They also began sponsoring THUNDER ON THE BEACH 4-5 years ago, & rackin' in the cash from it.

You might say "Loud pipes (& Boom boxes), saved PC's life!!"

Snert, well said. I live just off a state highway and summer is the best with all the sounds, the trucks with the open pipes and engine braking, the bikes of course, and the cars, the whine of a supercharger, especially when the car is just moving along. I don't like the subwoofer type systems, just got a used pair of Cerwin Vega speakers for the house with 15 inch woofers so I can educate people what real music should sound and feel like! But anyway, any sound can and should be taken at what it is, and appreciate what these people have done with their machines and enjoy it,life is too short to get upset about anything like this.
btw I am using stock pipes with a little something missing(baffles)!

I have a half-hour ride to work. In that time, I notice at least ten cars or trucks that know I'm there by sound, not sight.
Phil, I've done a lot of riding on that stretch of A1A recently, and my bike is not exactly stealthy. Short-shifting and being light on the throttle are all that's needed. The biggest danger on A1A is bikini zone-out. It is, after all, Spring Break.

I enjoy loud pipes and loud music. I have produced a new pipe that makes my bike louder than any harley I know. I also have installed a dash on my bike with a 1000 watt stereo. I have put speakers on the handle bars, in the saddlebags and a bigass woofer on the luggage rack. I normally crank my bike up at around 0530 in the morning to go to work. I pull out around 0645. I can get away with this because I am a police officer and if anyone complains I threaten them with Police violence or unwarrented tickets for minor infractions like not putting their parking brake on in their driveway. Noone seems to complain anymore. I do need my bike and my stereo to be this loud because I wear heavy duty ear protection. I don't want to lose my hearing.

yeah, it's been a while moe. wow, what a picture of my ex-wife. Can someone photoshop a bulls-eye on her so I have a target to shoot. Maybe one day I'll head on over to the east on my bike but I don't forsee that trip in the future. I have a new wife, a new 9 year old and a 13 week old boy. I don't get to ride much anymore.

May be unpopular but I wanna be heard on the moon even if there is a party going on there!! LOL I have run straight drag pipes on every bike I ever rode except my BMW and my 2 50s Triumphs all the rest are LOUD and I love the sound. Has nothing to do with saving lives or what anyone else thinks I simply LOVE the sound!!!
