I would be afrid to do it here in the NE, I do not think the cagers around here would take to kindly to anyone passing them when they been sitting in stop and go traffic for an hour.
The truckers will stagger the lanes so you can not get by and the cagers will turn into that little lane when they see you coming.
Gee John, after meeting all you nice New Englanders a couple months back, I can't imagine that any of you folks wouldn't take kindly to lane-splitting, and that this practice is somewhat of an unwritten "contract" that we motorcyclists have made with all the cagers here in the Golden State. You see, it goes like this:
________________________________________________________
The party of the first part, known in this contract as people crazy enough to ride motorcycles in densely populated areas and through bumper to bumper automobile congested traffic in order to save a bit of the world's energy resources, and to spare a little less wear and tear on the highway system that covers (too) much of this once most beautiful part of the world(that was before EVERYBODY and his BROTHER decided that..."Cali-for-ne is the place they outta to be, so they loaded up their truck and moved to Beverly, Hills that is")...and thus because motorcyclists do their part in these endevours to help limit said congestion and energy-drain, they will be allowed to engage in a practice known as LANE-SPLITTING, because this practice when exhibited in a reasonable manner can accomplish said lessening of said congestion, uses less gasoline, and also as a side benefit uses less space in parking lots.(you know...those things where they "Paved Paradise" and put up all of those things)
The party of the second part, known in this contract as drivers or "cagers" will have to just stew in their automobiles/SUVs/trucks, BUT ACCEPT GRACEFULLY their decision to commute in that oversized and energy ineffcient vehicle of their choice, and watch as those "crazy motorcyclist"(the party of the first part in this contract, remember?) pass them by and arrive to work portions of hours before they do.

(signed by "cagers")-_____________________________

So you see John, it's very simple. We Californians have always been just a step ahead of the rest of this country in many many ways.(we didn't vote for "You Know Who" either, remember?!)
This "contract" is just ONE EXAMPLE of this forward thinking.
Cheers,
Dwight
(but I know what you're talkin' about when you mentioned the possible irate manner that some drivers would show towards a lane-splitting motorcyclist back there. You see, I've had the misfortune a couple of times to have driven a rental car in BOSTON...and...OH MY GAWD!!! Where the hell did those people learn to drive back there???!!![I said to myself]

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
