Here we go again, the British government "in all it's wisdom" are considering the legalization of cannabis again.
Considering the up's and downs of this natural drug (excuse the punt) what are your views and do you think it should be legal worldwide.
At the moment in the UK, if your found to have a small amount of cannabis on your person, the Police will take it and give you a caution.
Here's the considerations:
If it where legal, would there be less crime.
Would the side effects from cannabis be less than other drugs to treat medical conditions.
Do you think the use of cannabis for medical conditions should be decriminalized.

oh, ok I'll wade in (all IMHO of course) Yes there would be less drug crime (buying/selling cannabis that is)but there would be more societal upset in other areas - I think it would be at least as bad as alcohol which takes a terrible toll.
Now I speak as one who has had fun and trouble from alcohol and drugs but I believe the world would be a better place if access to both were harder. Alcohol is already "out of the bag" in most places. Let's not let the marijuana cat out until/unless we have to.

Likely to be a hot topic among the anti-s [the pro-s being all too doped up to bother posting!!!] It should be decriminalised for medical purposes, I think. If it is, I think it would then lead to general legality, since enforcing the legal/illegal distinction would be next to impossible for the overworked cops. However, I believe on the wider issue, prohibiting anything just puts production, sale and profits underground into the criminal world (look at the only experiment in Prohibition of alcohol in 1920's America). If junkies, or indeed anyone, could get heroin, crack, whatever, on prescription from their GP, to be consumed in controlled circumstances, at a realistic price set by the government, crime rates globally would collapse. Yes there would probably be a few more sad junkies around than there are now, but they wouldn't have to steal for their habit, they wouldn't die from overstrength doses, they wouldn't be outside society, excluded and abandoned. It would also be about as cool as snorting Rennies, which would destroy most of the appeal for the young.

Well I'll start buy saying. I have not touched pot in 20 yrs. But I feel it should be legalized regulated and taxed to death.
You can't stop it, alot of law enforcement resoures are waisted chasing it. Leagalization would take the imcome away form the current scumbags who import and sell it.I know highy productive people who use it, So I think the myth that is makes you lazy is bull***t. And I think the myth that it leads to "harder drugs" is bull***t also. Will it ever be leagal in the US? Nope. Too many tight a$$es.

excatly. The drug war is worse then the drugs. If they were to legalize everything then a bunch of junkies would die (im talking from the hard drugs not pot). They would stop using our tax dollars to fight it and it would really have no effect on the rest of us.

Yeah. You may drive a Ford, but I agree with ya on this one, Jack. I think I've tried the stuff probably 3 ro 4 times in my 55 years of life, and I don't see what the big deal is all about...save for the fact that I've NEVER had an intelligent conversation with any person who was smokin' the stuff at the time. Kind'a like those who over-imbibe.(ironically...legal, unless they're behind the wheel or behind the handlebars) I just remember constantly asking both sorts..."What the hell are you trying to say there, my good man???!!! I saw a show on TV the other night, on this very issue.
Medical (pot) is much for refined and thise who do have a script for it say they only have to take the medical verision every other day to control their pain vs. smoking a joint every couple of hours.
Legalize it and tax the hell out of it, but set aside a portion of the tax money to treat addiction and drug education.
I know those Rat Bas***** would never do that, they would just figure out away to steal it and line their own pockets, while the poor addicted indiviauls would be left to fend for themselves.

So trash, you're tellin' me that the following exchange between a fictional L.A. Police Detective and some equally fictional wigged-out hippie on an episode of "Dragnet 1969" is...heaven forbid....NOT REAL???????? _______ Wigged-out hippie: "Hey Pig! You're really not "with it", are ya dude?!" Joe Friday: "Yep! You're one groovy far-out cat, aren't you young man?" (dum-da-DUM-dum....dum-da-DUM-dum-DUMMMMM)

"Dragnet 1969"
I remember an episode when a young marijuana crazed couple got stoned and forgot their kid in the bathtub and he drowned. After it happened the parents said things like, "Wow man! Bummer, like that's not groovy man!" Of course then Friday gives them his speech and they become reformed. Priceless stuff! I wonder if I can get old episodes from Netflix. I'll have to take a look.

I just think its funny when people talk about all the other benefits of pot when they give their "legalize it" speach. Just admit you want to get high, and then at least I'll take you seriously

Jack makes some good arguements. I've heard many respectible people do the same. Missoula recently publically downgraded how aggressively they would pursue the garden variety pot smoker, they basically say it takes scant resources (police and attorney's) from catching and prosecuting violent offenders.
On the medical side, I underwent 6 months of chemo a number of years ago and if it weren't for the fact that it was illegal and at the time worked in law enforcement, I was sorely tempted. I have voted for legalized medical use ever since it has come up on the ballot. I don't think those opposed ever endured the joys of chemotherapy. Research might say it is inconclusive and doesn't work for everyone, but if it works for someone, that's good enough for me.

So let's see, you want people that are legally stoned driving on the same roads that we ride on? What is the "legal limit" for stoned?
No thanks, let's keep drivers as sober as possible. The cell phones are distracting enough.

Don't get me started. Here in the good of USA alcohol is legal, but you must be 21 to purchase. But you can serve your country at 18. Marijuana is illegal, why. Because you could grow it in the garden. Be tough to tax everyone growing their own. Full frontal nudity is a sin to watch but we can watch Jason,Freddy etc hack someone to death. Why, I ain't figured that out yet. Just a bunch of tight wigs I suppose. Mike

I wasn't trying to imply or condone that at all. Impaired is impaired, alcohol or other drugs and doesn't belong on the public highways. Hopefully most cops can determine whether a person's fit to drive.

And that the cop is arresting some stoned - or drunk! - bozo will be little consolation to the rider who's going to the hospital in an ambulance while his wrecked bike is being hauled away.
Drunk driving is wrong, distracted driving is wrong and stoned driving is wrong. Why legalize an activity that will ultimately put you as a rider at risk?

people do and will drive stoned regardless of whether it is legal or not. people who don't smoke don't not because it is illegal but because it does not fit there life style. prohibition of alcohol did not work in the 30's and prohibition of marijuana doesn't work now.

No problem schmike. I like the smoking debate thing to a point, but that's another thread I guess
Someone else said it too, legalizing it and doing it while driving are two different things. There are plenty of legal drugs you shouldn't take and drive. Tylenol PM for instance...

Kevin,
I'm agreeing with you. I was referring to "use under a doctor's care", which I feel has some merit. All the other rules apply. Missoula didn't legalize anything, just prioritizing their overall efforts.

I'll ask this again: How does a cop determine the "legal limit" when a driver is stoned?
Can you drive if you only smoke a little?
Or if it's not really good weed?
How long after smoking can one safely operate a car?
Will drivers suspected of being stoned have to submit to a blood test?
What should the penalty be for driving while stoned?
(edit)
JH, I didn't see your post until after mine, sorry.
The problem as I see it will be abuse, just like people abuse cell phones while driving.
One of our cars has On-Star, and even with hands-free operation I find myself distracted while driving and talking on the phone.
It makes you wonder how many people will drive while stoned if weed is easily available, and how distracted they will be while laughing hysterically and looking for fast food.
