Jack makes some good arguements. I've heard many respectible people do the same. Missoula recently publically downgraded how aggressively they would pursue the garden variety pot smoker, they basically say it takes scant resources (police and attorney's) from catching and prosecuting violent offenders.
On the medical side, I underwent 6 months of chemo a number of years ago and if it weren't for the fact that it was illegal and at the time worked in law enforcement, I was sorely tempted. I have voted for legalized medical use ever since it has come up on the ballot. I don't think those opposed ever endured the joys of chemotherapy. Research might say it is inconclusive and doesn't work for everyone, but if it works for someone, that's good enough for me.
