thanks Ian, I'm still making up my mind on whether I'll do it. Not sure how much diff it will make in sound and become noisy. Probably will though as it might give my bike a cheap way of providing more oooomph. thanks again

The sound depends on how many you remove. Just do 1 at a time and reinstall to test. I have mine hollowed out and I can tell you they are slightly louder than Sceptres. My friend runs the Sceptre pipes with no baffles and my shotguns I made from SM tapered pipes are about the same,Wendys slash cut stock America pipes gutted are slightly louder than both of ours.
To give you an idea of the sound if you have ever heard a 60s Triumph with drag pipes, it isn't that loud. (like my chopper)

another consideration a properly tuned exhaust with some restriction can make more power than straight pipes. I just like the noise!! LOL

I'm certainly tempted but will wait a bit and one day I'll just say, yep - now's the time. cheers

I am going to take my stockers to work and cut the last baffle out with the plasma cutter. Should I just try cutting the weld or will I have to cut all the way around to get it to come out?

Well, I tried this today to no avail. I guess my next attempt will be drilling around the outside edge and connect the dots. Then I'll have to die grind the rough spots. I was really hoping that plasma cutter would have worked. Would have made it a lot easier.

I have done both types of stock pipes and the air hammer slowly woking your way around is not just to cut the welds. If you slowly work your way around it crushes the baffle plate down so that it fits out through the opening at the end of the slash cut without hurting the rolled over part. I use a horizontal band saw to cut the ends off the Speedmaster pipes so that isn't an issue on those.

So you used the air hammer on the first baffle? Maybe I'll try that before I start drilling 30 holes.

I used an air chisel on all the baffles. I used the angled chisel with a point with a 3rd vane on top. Commonly used to remove car mufflers. I drilled a piece of steel rod so a straight tool for the air hammer used to drive pins would fit in one end and the part that normally fits in the end of the air hammer would fit in the other to extend the chisel to reach the deeper baffles. Was fast and easy and if you do it carefully you can't tell anything was ever in there.

Did it actually cut the first baffle or did it just knock the welds loose?

knocked the welds loose. But I did work my way around to crumple it up for easier removal.Be careful or you will catch the screen holding the packing in. I left that in my pipes also you should leave the reducer cone in at the header end.

Thanks man! That is a great tip. I'm only taking the first two out.(Or last two depending on how you look at it.) I may drill some holes in the third one depending on how it sounds. I'll let you know. Thanks again!

there is a guy on Ebay who sells them like you describe he removes 2 baffles and drills the last one with 3 1/2 holes. His ID is chevy605 I watch him he buys stock pipes cheap and does this then resells them. I gte a kick out of it.

Yeah, I've seen them. In fact at one point I was going to sell my stockers and he said that he was paying $60 for them. I kept them. I am glad I did. Now I have something to play with and can compare them to my long TOR's.

Well I just proceded to ruin my right side silencer. I tried the air hammer with a blunt bit and it went right through the rear baffle and kept doing the same as I went around the outside edge of the baffle. It was too late by the time I realized that there is a perferated liner with packing under it around the inside of the pipe beneath the baffle. I wound up mashing that liner back and it's all buckled up and pushed back. There is no way to clean this up that I can see. I guess I'll just be happy with my TOR's. At least they were stockers that aren't worth much.

Sorry dude , I told ya what chisel to use and to be careful I even warned you about catching the mesh. I have done about 10 sets that way now and they look perfect.

Short bursts straight down not around.

I used a metal hole saw on the end baffle and then just used a piece of rebar and pounded out the other two. Sounds GReat!

No apology needed. I screwed it up all by myself. I was going straight down. And even short bursts would put the bit right through the plate. Maybe my air hammer has too much balls.

So after a few brews to drown my sorrows I am wondering whether to try a set of Bub's or buy another set of stockers and try it again. Here's the deal. I really like the long look of the stockers. That's why I wanted to modify them. What would you do?

All is not lost! That is a catelytic converter you mashed. If you have a "T" post, you can knock it right out. You'll clean out the reducer as a friendly causality, but you can replace it with a $4 one from JCWhitney. I've done it and it works fine.

I mis understood if you didn't go out through the chrome it is still salvageable. But it means totally gutting the pipes like guitarted said. Made your job harder but if you are careful from here on you can still do it. Only probalem I see is with the mesh and packing out you couls get that tinny sound I have heard some people talk about.

Oh and with the reducer out you will have to put a remaveable baffle in I can tell you where to get to give you some back pressure or you will loose preformance.

Dog is correct. Yes, you will need something for back pressure. I'll tell you, the converter is not only pressed into the pipe, it has a steel pin on each side. It's in there really good. I used a chissel and a couple hours on the first one. On the second- I figured I ruined them already- I stuck a "T" post in the big end and slammed it into the floor. 3rd whack and it all came out- reducer and all.

I think I might look for another set of stockers and start over. I'll use the other side of the ones I have now to practice on. What I did wrong was that I tried to hammer on the actual baffle plate hoping to break the weld loose when what I should have been doing was to try to cut the weld.

Dog: Any chance you can get me a pic of that air hammer bit?

I sure could send me your E mail and I'll take a pic over the next couple days. I have a poker run to go on at the Zinc City Drag Strip tomorrow. I'll try and take a shot of the whole set up I use if I can.(not sure where I put the extension! LOL)
