Hi everyone, I've just ordered a freak air box conversion kit from Brent and just wondered if anyone has one of these fitted. It comes with new main jets but i'm not sure whether
it will run ok with the standard needles or do the need replacing with adustables...any ideas?...steve

standard needles are fine, you can add shims to them to richen them. You may want to find some "Thruxton" needles or Thunderbird sport needles, if your bike didn't come with them stock.

Before I swaped to the CR's, I was runnin' 160's with no shims, drilled slides, and 3 1/2 turns out on stock needles. Not to sure on the hp, but the good old butt dyno told me that it's was happy where it was.

I just put the K&N pods on, with a Dynojet kit, and 145 mains. 1 shim under the bottom setting and 2.5 turns. The thing rips. Every bike seems to be different. Put aside a whole day to experiment, but don't worry, you wont regret it...

I'm running a do-it-yourself Freak, pods, crankcase breather, etc. Just got Specialty Spares shorty's. In the process of rejetting up to 160 mains with 1 shim. Can't wait to see how it rings it up.

might wanna go a little bigger on the pilot. I bet if you dyno it you will find you are lean until about 4,000 RPM. I have stock pipes with all baffles removed except the reducer cone. I run 155 main and 48 pilot and am at about 13 on the dyno and about 65 HP

I will add I was extremely lean down low when I first did it because I didn't change the pilot jet. I also have no air injection and have the freak kit fitted. I should add that before you use what I said as any kind of guide so you can compare to your own configuration.

I forgot to mention i'd removed the AI Ian, but judging by what you've said i may move up to 45 pilots. I checked the plug colours again after a good ride and they seemd to be right, could probably do with finding someone with a dyno to check it.

I also haven't shimmed my needles but have been thinking about Thruxton needle setups. Supposed to improve preformance.

Many of us have had good results with TBS needles, sort of in between stock and Thrux.

I'm really interested in this thread cos I'm yet to do the freak thing but am trying to work out what pilots and jets to buy when I do get it. From what i can gather with my Tor longs, I would probably need 45 pilots with 55 jets or so. I would appreciate if anyone had ideas on this one for me given the tors?

just standard with no baffles removed. not sure how to do that or if that will make them a bit too loud

not 55, maybe 155... Give Pat's jetting calculator a try, gives you a great starting point.

been on a few rides and seems to be running better with the 45 pilots, the bad popping on over run is a lot better so might even try a set of 48's...trial and error but getting there slowly..

Negative- not with stock pipes. Adjust you air mix screws.

Agree with cowboy. 2 turns sounds pretty lean. Try turning each one out a half turn at a time and ride it after each adjust. You want to hear a burble sound but not sharp popping on decell.

Gday Bluespoke. I was wondering what the part number of the Dynojet pou installed is? I ahve noticed on there website that they only recommend them for bikes with the airbox still installed. I am running a freak also and was wondering if this was the kit you used. what notch on the needle did you use. I know these kits have a lot of adjustibility so it sounds like they perform well on freak kitted bikes.

I used the 5122 kit. I have an 865 running K&N Pods, and Thunderbike Pipes. The largest jets in the kit were 118,s, which are equivelent to 135,s, which I found too lean, so I fitted 145,s, the Dynojet springs, and the needles on the bottom setting.

i've taken it for a good run with the 45 pilots in and still getting a lot of popping on decel.it also seems to be running a bit too rich judging by the plug colours so i'm going to switch back to 42 pilots. i'm now out to 3 turns on the mixture screws. just to recap 160 mains, back to 42 pilots, sliders drilled, freak kit,AI removed, standard tiumph short slashed,3 turns out.wondering wether removing the chrome half covers and leaving the k+N pods open will make any difference..can only try..
oh..the carbs are checked for balance every time i've finished tinkering..

Many of us found the 160 mains to be too much. 148-150-152 is probably enough for you... And you can leave the covers/cheesegraters on. The KN's can still breath. My2c

It does sound like that if you're running rich, it's the mains that probably need to go down rather than the pilots.
