Well Otto Von Greg,
I told you once you are living in the high rent district. oh and btw way Eastern Ct. Is not quite the "waiste land" as someone called it.
Yeah, but when I say eastern CT is affordable, that's a relative term, compared to western CT, it's affordable, but compared to the rest of the country, with the exception of places like LA, it's still pretty darn pricey, so if I'm going to hand over a quarter mill on a house, by golly, I'm going to LOVE where I live. Now, as to eastern CT being a wasteland, well, that was just one of those Yahoos from Vermont, got to take them with a grain of road salt ya know!!! I quite like some of the towns over there like Woodstock, Lebanon, and Brooklyn, just to name a few! And I think if we just put up some spike strips down on I-84 and I-95 around the state line (of NY), and torpedoed the ferrys coming across from LonGIsland, the prices and stuff would taper back down to reality! Not saying that there's anything wrong with New Yorkers mind ya, I flip them off in traffic just as quickly as I do the Massholes...

" Greg,
$250,000 bought you a pretty nice home in CT. 15 years ago now those same homes go for $450,000 and up.
It is not all doom and gloom $250,000 will still buy you a decent home in CT. it just takes alot of looking, networking.
If you want to live in picture post card land (Litchfield) you are going to have to pay for the priviledge. Anything west, south or north of Waterbury and they know they have you by the short hairs and you are going to have to pay.
I do not know if you have checked out S. Windsor or Ellington both really nice towns, good schools, plenty of shopping for the wife and safe neighborhoods for the kids and nice homes are affordable.

I called it a waste land. I've actually spent a lot of time over there on the 395 corridoor. Not bad really, awesome roads and nice scenery, but my friend who lives there (oakdale) just hates it. Not sure why, maybe living there is different than visiting, and a lot could be his expectations. He's from RI, and if ever you want to see a waste land, take Rt 6 thru Foster. Three or four abandones flea markets. WTF? Anywhoo...
I am one of those engineers looking to move north, and as someone said, Windsor is a nice town and close to a lot of big companies. If my company up in MA doesn't pan out I'm taking a good look at CT. North and east of Hartford is fine with me...

Poppy, believe me, I have considered up that way(moreso toward Torrington), and have seen some nice houses in the lower $200k range, but then I run into over a 100 mile round trip (it's 67 miles to S. Windsor and 79 to Ellington each way) every day for work, part of which means going through Waterbury and it's daily traffic jams, people heading to the Cape on Friday afternoon, etc..., so I'd probably end up spending 90 minutes each way just commuting, and frankly 40-50minutes each way is enough time wasted in a car as it is now. Not to mention the costs of going 100 miles each day when gas hits $3 a gallon this summer (not "IF", but "WHEN") again. As it is, by the time I'm done with work (5:30-6:15 almost every evening, plus the obligatory 3 Saturdays a month), I see my kids maybe 1 to 1-1/2 hours a night(most of which is eaten up by helping with homework, eating supper, etc...) before they have to go to bed for school, and I'm gone in the morning to beat traffic and be into work at 7:30, so don't see them then either. Forget even having time for my wife and I, so if I then start commuting from that far out, well.... Due to the agreement that came with relocation assistance, I'm stuck here till Sept. 2008 (or have to pay it back), so the least of all evils is to pay through the nose and rent, and then after 2 years, if something hasn't changed, flee to someplace more hospitable for working people. I might consider eastern CT, IF I can find a job that will pay close to what I make now (yes there are jobs in eastern CT, but even in western CT companies can't pay what the cost of living demands, and from what I saw during my job search, eastern CT wasn't much better, but then we get too close to the in-laws, who are about as good as in-laws could possibly be, but still could be problematic from a meddling standpoint if we're THAT close, if you get my drift. Only time will tell, I've got 2 years to sort it out, and make up my mind. When I moved here, I had no illusions of "the grass is always greener" stuff, I came somewhat prepared for what I found (since I lived in CT for 4 years back in 1987-1991), but even then was hit with sticker shock despite the weeks of research...

We're looking at The Martha's Vineyard factor here - because of our 90 mile proximity to NYC, it's becoming too expensive for any but the wealthy. The town of Salisbury, CT has a poulation of roughly 4,000. Well over one half of the homes there are owned by NYC weekenders, who arrive Friday night, and leave Sunday night. That has it's pros and cons when we're talking town taxes collected vs. services utilized, but the cost of housing has skyrocketed. A number of old time lakeside cabin dwellers have been displaced due to recent tax re-vals. Their 2 or 3 season cabins built by Grampa in the 20s or 30s are now considered multi million dollar properties, with five figure tax bills. Kinda hard to come up with ten grand for the tax man on 40 or 50 thousand per year or less gross income.

LJ, yeah, that kind of goes back to the whole "affordable housing" joke like they have here in New Milford or up in Kent, where an "affordable house" will still cost you $285,000. I saw an article in the LCT(Litchfield County Times) about affordable housing in Sharon for under $200,000, which would be a GORGEOUS place to live, but then you get back into the over 100 mile round trip commute thing. I'm going to give it a fair chance, cause like I said, I really like living up in my little valley (or something similar) up here in Northville, despite the costs, and who knows, with a decent promotion or two, I could be back in business. Funny thing is, I can just squeeze the rent around here for a nice place, which works out to be what the mortgage would be if I were buying it MINUS the property tax and homeowners insurance. That's why I'm still mildly optimistic, cause I'm not THAT far out of range of what I could do, if things work out. And, if worse comes to worse, and I pack it up and make a run for Colorado again in 2008, I won't have to worry about selling a house here like I'm doing right now in South Carolina. Just terminate my lease, pack my stuff, and away we go...

Yeah 240 grand for a shed seems a little pricey, but i'm sure it has a lovely view.

well, I took the other test on that "what kind of sports car" test website, and it says that I am a Talent, so very creative, so maybe I can do some murals and stuff to turn it into the "Artisans Cottage" that it mentioned, then sell it for $350,000....

I want to get my rant on too, Cost of living in CT is outrageous. I work in Stamford and rent in Darien (the other Greenwich). I am paying 1200 a month to live in a 700sqft basement appartment. Its a good deal for the area, but if you compare it to anywhere eles in the country it sucks. I came to the realization that I will most likely not own a house until my folks die. I work for a nonprofit organization, so I'm not rolling in the money but it looks like I'm a millionare now! Many of my collegues cant afford to live in Fairfield county and have an 1.5 hour comute on 95. I'm on call 24/7 with the boat and if stuff happens in the middle of the night I need to get there quickly so I'm spending twice as much for an appartment. what to do with my millions?
Hold my beer......

Does your governor know our governor? I think they have been trading ideas. Tax everything and everyone to excess and give it away to those that shouldn't be here. At the same time, dictate every thought and and action we have.
At the the end of this year, we (those of us in Oregon) will need to have a passport to fly as the Oregon drivers licence will no longer be considered a valid id (seems we give away too many drivers licences to illegal aliens).
