Don't put the pooch in quarantine unless you're moving there indefinitely. When I lived in Hawaii I worked with someone who regretted putting their dog through that (and a 2 yr. old no less)because they only ended up staying for a year. This was pretty much the consensus, too of just about everyone I spoke to about it. Since the dog is very old, I suspect that he'd be at less risk staying with someone you trust rather than bringing him to the middle of the Pacific to be cared for by strangers. I know you can visit them while in quarantine, but everyone said it was heartbreaking not to be able to take them home.
