The Pingel petcock claims that the stock petcock can starve an engine at higher rpms. As I understand it the carb is fed fuel from the bowl through the main jet. I have trouble believing that the fuel is drawn from the bowl through the main jet faster than the stock petcock will allow it to flow. Your opinions please. Also could someone refresh my memory on what size fuel line our bikes use.

I really wouldn't worry about changing the petcock unless yours is leaking. The ignition cuts out at red-line anyway. The line is 1/4 in.

thanks Andy,It seems to me that the opening in the main jet is so small that the stock petcock should easily keep up with fuel supply.

Most people went with the Pingle because of the stock one sticking or malfunctioning. I did because it's chrome  AND the stocker was starting to stick. btw, the fuel line is 5/16" not 1/4"

Same here, my stocker was sticking and starting to weep gas. Not alot of gas but I'd have to clean it with a rag after riding. The Pingel is so nice.

thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm sure eventually I will get the Pingel for the reasons mentioned above, but if it was a performance issue I would get one right away.

I have heard of carbs being starved on 60's era bonnies so that dual petcocks were fitted. The highest flow rate I can imagine would be something like 10 gallons/hour (100 mph, 10 mpg) which would be .17 gal/min. I can imagine a badly designed petcock being restricting that. Anybody know how big a float bowl is? (how much it would hold).

My modified '49 Trophy had 2 petcocks on the stock tank. The bottom of the left side of the tank was the reserve. At something over 110 MPH, (I was too busy hanging on to look) I could get a few more MPH out of it if I opened both. Didn't make any difference at sane speeds except that running out of gas with both open was a bad thing.
Come to think of it, it went about .2 or .3 seconds faster in 1/4 mile with both open.

I would guestimate that the bowl holds about 1.5-2 oz.s GB- 110+MPH on a '49 Trophy, now that takes a big set of float bowls my friend

I was looking at them and doubting the performance issue myself. It would be a huge improvement in looks over the ugly factory supplied unit. My question involves the website's (british-customs.com)mention of "Required minor modification to the gas tank fuel delivery hole (petcock entrance)" Can anyone tell me what mods are required, is it all models???

Yes, the filter screen is going to be a little wider than the opening on the tank. You will have to widen the hole a bit.

I have run through an entire tank at well over 100mph with no starvation problems (16T gearing). Unless your engine is highly modified, I think the Pingle is more for looks or if your stock tap is leaking.

Now why is it that I believe you?
I replaced my stocker with a pingel because the dadburn stocker would dribble fuel. Couldn't see replacing garbage with garbage.
