I was flipping through the channels tonight and stopped on the Late Show (David Letterman) because there's this guy sitting there with his right arm in a sling. Hmmmmm....

Turns out, he's an Australian abalone diver who fought off a great white shark attack. Watched the whole segment and I was VERY impressed with his demeanor, stark humor, and the story. Had to look it up and found this:

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,21104597-2,00.html

That is one tough fellow!!!

One quote there caught my attention:
Between 1995 and 2005, Australia reported 74 shark attacks, second only to the US state of Florida, according to the US-based International Shark Attack File.

Interesting in that I've surfed up and down the Florida east coast for many years and although have encountered sharks (you paddle with your fingertips! ), I've never seen anyone bit....

Well, of course there's a simple answer for this, Phil. Those dudes you surf with must have all graduated from law school.

This called..."professional courtesy", ya know.

(ahh...the old jokes are still some of the best ones, aren't they?!)

Yep! I just watched this guy on Letterman tonight too. Talk about "cool as a (sea) cucumber", huh?! I liked the part where he talked about after that Great White spit him out, it just swam around him probably trying to figure out what the hell it had just tried to eat.

Not much of a joke when it's true

OK first off go easy on lawyers!! They aren't all defending OJ..

Secondly, last year for halloween my friend wanted to go as a "shark with a fricken laser beam on its head" like in Austin Powers, so he dressed in a suit (as a lawyer) and put a laser pointer on his head in a bad wig. IT was REALLY funny.

I've always enjoyed when, after a shark bite, the news reporter says "Sharks! They are lurking in our beaches. Tonight at 10."

Since when did they become our beaches and not the sharks?

And why do they always lurk at 10?

I was in a hotel in Lewiston Idaho and the teaser story was "How to avoid shark attack." Keep in mind, this was in IDAHO!!!! If you are being attacked by a fish 1200 miles from the ocean, God wants you dead.

I worked at the National Aquarium here in Baltimore for a long time. Got to feed the sharks a few times. Pretty cool. You know, a fair number of people survive Great White attacks. One theory is that they take a test bite, see if your edible, then swim off. Another one, that makes more sense to me, is that often great whites will strike a seal or whatever, then let it go and circle out of site, wait for the prey to go into shock and eat it with no worry of damage to their sensory packed snout.

I live by some very sensible rules.

I wont go anywhere where i might get eaten.
I wont go in the ocean.
I wont walk in long grass.

Sharks dont bother me in my house, and i see no reason to bother them in theirs.

Good snake is a dead snake.

I just added something to my "to do" list: Go surfing with Phil! Don't you know we'll look absolutely dashing? I think I can surf wearing my thong, straw hat and wing tip shoes. Oh, I forgot the Argyle Socks.

AND.... to everyone else,
Don't worry about snakes. Have you ever seen what a weed eater will do to a snake? Rips them to pieces. A weed eater is great for whipping kids, but deadly to a snake.
