There are always issues in contract negotiations other than strictly wages. Sometimes strikes (or lockouts) are called over an impasse in contract language that has nothing to do with wages. Many of the things that we take for granted today (40 hour week, worker's compensation, payment in legal tender, child labor laws, etc.) are a direct result of the sacrifices of previous generations of organized workers.
