most crew chiefs will try to get away with everything they can and HOPE they...

Hey, all I'm sayin' is if a 72 yr old grandpa could do it, it can't be that tough.

Plus people who are really good at something make it look VERY easy...watch some guy plaster a wall some day how hard can it be...just spread the plaster on your trowel then onto the wall....oh yeah...try it some time!!!

Plaster? I don't even like doing sheetrock!

So instead of saying somthing positive like "Pretty cool this old geazer can still muster up the gumption to do the round-a-round." You use it to attack the sport.

Geez, does everything have to have a positive spin put on it? I heard enough of that during the broadcast. To me it was just more interesting to think about what it would be like to drive the car myself. Because if a 72 yr old could do it(albeit with a long history of driving in NASCAR), I'd like to try it myself. And to me that's a positive message right there. Maybe it'll get other people thinking they can do it too, and somebody who didn't think they could might try.

But I wonder just how much NASCAR officials and the other drivers wanted Hylton to make the field? Did they really want to see if the 72 yr old guy had the stamina to drive at 180 mph for 4-5 hours?

Haven't really been too much into NASCAR since the RESTRICTOR PLATES slowed those puppies down.

I've said this before whenever this subject comes up, but I ALWAYS THOUGHT that RACING was SUPPOSED to be an exercize in DEVELOPMENT...the DEVELOPMENT of machines that will go faster and faster, and ALSO become safer and safer at the same time.

Since these RESTRICTOR PLATES came onto the scene, ALL it's become is one big "Good Ol' Boy" contest driven by personality conflicts.

HELL, I remember thirty friggin' years ago when "King" Richard Petty was goin' around the track at least 20 miles an hour FASTER than any of these yahoos are today.

Now...THAT'S "progress" for ya, HUH?!

Ya had to mention restrictor plates? That was the downfall of NASCAR.

Derek, check out the Richard Petty Driving Experience. There's a track at Phoenix for this, only 2 hours away!

From that website:

Your hands are on the wheel, your foot is on the gas, and you're in the driver's seat for 8 laps around the speedway in a 358 cubic inch V-8 NASCAR style racecar that roars with 600 horsepower.

The "cheating" element has always been a part of NASCAR. I remember Bobby Allison being caught with extra fuel storage in his roll cage !! Taking that away (ie: Car of the Future, & restrictor plates) takes the interest away (my opinion, of course).

Also, the first NASCAR race that I went to was the Talladega 500 in 1972. Guess who won?? James Hylton... the old geezer you guys are referring to.

Anyone see the finish of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck race Friday night? A sure Ford win became a 3rd place finish - by .034 of a second, right at the finish line! Toyota teamed up on the Ford, and went 3-wide at the stripe. Pretty awesome stuff, at 180+ mph.

I won a 30 lap Nascar driving school at Texas Motor Speedway. My four technicians, a parts counter man, and myself won a contest at work 4 years ago. Three 10-lap sessions, with a professional rider along for the ride (with his own brake pedal for emergencies). Though it was over by lunch, we were all surprised at how much the morning had taken out of us - we were drained! Would have loved another 30 laps after lunch, though!

A few years ago I had gone down to the local Malibu Grand Prix here by the house, and seems like I went the full 5-10 laps (whatever I had paid for) without getting out of the car. It is a road course, with open wheeled souped up go-carts with indy-style bodies on them....you race the clock and try to better your own time each lap. I can tell you, that after that multi-lap stint, I was very surprised at how much it had taken out of me. Gave me a whole new respect for those that do it for sveral hundred miles at a time!

Indoor supercarts are a blast, too. Highly recommended.

I did some drag racing when I was a kid as well. I got tired of drive line repairs to the '63 Falcon I needed for school transportation, so that ended. Any kind of motorsport is only as challenging as you want to make it.
To all the armchair experts: You want cheap fun? Get an old Toyota, put in a few roll bars and racing belts. Most local oval tracks have a 4 cylinder division that is affordable and entertaining. F1 it ain't, but who has a billion dollars? Be warned! It may lead to upper divisions that will drain your wallet and clear your calender! Racing season kept me from attending many a wedding for a number of years(and the downside was.....?).
Shut off the idiot box, get off your butts and do it yourself. Win a trophy, total a car, or get your bell rung and then tell me what you know about racing.
Any other circle track veterans out there besides Roundy and me?
Mike Sr.

Right on Mike!!!
Any racing is good when you're in the seat. I never did any circle track, but knew a guy who ran Sportsman for a while, then moved into Grand Nationals. His name's Tom Busch. Kurt and Kyle's dad. He was a Matco tool salesman when I was wrenching at dealerships and he used to give us tickets all the time .
Haven't seen Tom for about 20 or so years, but it shows how much it can get in the blood.

I used to run some Bracket drags in high school and did some claimer off-road racing in a 71 Baja Bug. That was a blast .

I did the Richard Petty School at the Richmond International Raceway. Drove one of the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge back up cars. Talk about a BLAST! Most fun I ever had in a cage.
