Honestly, I think it would be hard to say which came first, since no one here knows when the Thruxton first hit the drawing boards at Triumph, and there was open discussion about the Thruxton soon after I bought my bike in 2003. I did however write to Norton about that, because they made a claim that they had the first retro Brit sportbike or something like that, and mentioned that the Thruxton was already in production. So, yes, the Thruxton was technically (regardless of which started on the design boards first) first, because it was actually in production quite a bit before the 952 was actually for sale...
