I'm not sure what all it takes to pull those legs apart. I kept mine together and had the legs painted.
There was a topic on this and I remember that a plastic piece would strip or something when pulling apart. Might be worth looking for that info.
Gloss black sounds like a good look. I think you'll be happy.
