Dunno if this is true or not but if it is, it's a bit sinister. The Police have started putting small highly reflective discs on the wheel rims or wedged between the treads, on the tyres of cars/bikes parked on the car park of pubs which is private land, without the permission or consent of the owners. The idea being that whenever a Police car sees what would be a luminous disc from the side or a luminous band from the rear of a moving car, then they know the vehicle probably contains someone who has been drinking. I don't have a problem with culling drink driving but the civil liberties issues concern me.
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.

Not sure if it's urban mythe or not but it cetainly sounds about right the way this country is going.
If it catches a drunk driver then great. Perhaps tattooing 'drunk scum' across the forehead should follow.

they used to hang out and watch for people who could not get the key in the door first time. as soon as they would drive off, they'd be pulled over G
I never wanted to lead, and I never wanted to follow.
I just wanted to ride.

There's a local dive in my town. That on certain evenings the cops sit about a 1/8 mile down the road from. They watch for anybody getting squirly out of the parking lot.
Biker hang out..go figure.

Ok, so the cop is sitting up the road watching the bar parking lot at 1am fishing for easy pickings. Out comes this guy, he staggers all around the prking lot, stumbles on several cars, after three or four tries gets his keys into the door and gets in. he revs the motor really loud and goes out the parking lot and up the road. The cop follows him a bit and then pulls the guy over. the driver gets out, does all the field sobriety tests and passes them all. The cop finally asks how much he had to drink that eve. "Not a drop all night officer, I'm the designated decoy." bada bing....
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Well said, but i believe the majority is complaining about the point. If you stop by a bar and have A beer and they mark your tires you have to deal with the hassle of being pulled over. If your drunk its normally noticable in your driving, they shouldent have to mark you to be able to tell.

So if this is the case, then me being on antibiotics can't drink anyway (get the feeling this is really starting to cheese me of....?) and then some pillock is gonna mark my wheels to say I've been to the pub...and get pulled over and breath tested... ok do I have to come back from Oz...?

Not a myth a reality. Been there! and I don't drink when I ride. The officer said he would let me off with a warning for the loud pipes. Triumph shorts.

So what happens when you are responsible and take a cab or catch a ride with a sober driver? Do the cops go back after bar hours and remove the reflectors from my wheels or do I wind up getting pulled over the next night when I haven't drank a drop but my tires are still marked from the previous evening?

Personally I'd be more concerned about the "civil liberty issues" of some drunk running into me than I would about cops using sneaky methods to enforce the law that says they're not allowed to get drunk and run into me.

I hear that! Yeah it is sneaky, and I don't like anyone doing anything to my ride that I have to clean off, but it's better than having some kid walking down the street get run over.
I read some statistic somewhere (and we all know about those) that a man age 35 to 45 riding a bike at 2AM is 40,000 times more likely to die than someone in a car as rush hour! And I see LOTS of rush hour accidents, they just must not be as fatal due to speed... This study cited the fact that most bars close at 2am...

Yeah! I saw those same stats somewhere myself, Benny!
And I think they also said that you're 80,000 times more likely to die if YOU'RE the drunk riding your Harley home from the bar at 2am TOO.
(could be the reason those boys in Milwaukee pump those suckers out of their factory so fast.....this is their "attrition theory" at work)
Cheers, Dwight
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Well they basically implied that with the bar closing time correlation. One thing I LIKED about that study was they tried to make sense of the stats (citing traffic speed at rush hour, bar closing at 2am, etc) rather than just draw conclusions and use them to prove a point.

It is only a temporay measure. The next development in the UK is "intelligent licence plates". Under the guise of "theft prevention" of licence plates. (This is a big issue in the UK as only credited suppliers can legally manufacture licence plates and they are being stolen or 'cloned' to avoid fines for speeding, entering central London without paying the congestion charge, and to disguise vehicles used for criminal activities)
New plates are being fitted with a microchip that is being 'read' by roadside / undersurface detectors and the information about speed, direction and location stored on computer. This info can be made available in real time. The onus is on the owner to prove they weren't driving.
Oh... for 'security' reasons, Politicians, Senior Police Officers, the Judiciary etc will not have to comply and will remain untraceable and unaccountable.
Surley it would be better for the cops to make their presence know by several high profile visits to the bars during the evenings - this would deter a lot of drink drivers.
Sadly prevention don't raise revenue so the politicians aren't interested.
Bikers 'meets' are popular in the Uk and are generally held at pubs. although some riders do have a pint, most stick to pop. However, the statistics showing a gathering of , in some cases of upwards of 500 bikes in one place (purpose built to serve alcahol) for a couple of hours plus the death statistics mentioned above, will only be interpreted by anti biking organisations as 'bikers are drunk drivers and bikes are death traps' and will prove powerful ammunition to get bikes banned all together.
If you do it today you MIGHT regret it. If you CAN'T do it tomorrow you WILL regret it.
