Ok, a big one for sure. Last night when Jane and I were watching our newest favorite TV show, "Heroes ", I noticed that Hiro's Nakimura's dad's license plate was very unique and I even knew what it meant.
Anyone else catch that small bit of trivia?
The license plate was a NY plate with NCC-1701 on it.

If you know what this means, welcome to the King of the Geeks Club!

But the point was, that his father was played by George Takai, aka Mr Sulu. That was the best part. A subtle bit of humor tossed in there for us geeks.
By the way, you know the difference between a geek and a nerd?

thats a clever bit of writing on the part of the Geeks for the other geeks...

BTW Geeks bite the heads off of chickens and or snakes at carny side shows...

but that definition went the way of gay meening your happy...

not that there's anything wrong with the current usage

Notice how I never mentioned George Takai is using one BOTH of the modern useages of the words....not that theres any thing wrong with that

Ok, I stuck NCC-1701 in Google (who wouldn't?) and Matt Jeffries (designer of the ship) tells us what the ref # stands for .
Sorry to the geeks who already knew - I didn't as I was never really into ST.

I noticed who the guy was! Does that count? Very cool indeed. I like it that some shows appreciate that people like it and toss in stuff like that. Heck, LOST even had fake commercials on TV for companies mentioned in the show for people to go play some online game! I'm not THAT into it, but it's cool.

I'm not gonna show myself up by posting that I'm a geek, but I didn't have to google what NCC-1701 was, or that I knew what Capt Kirk's middle name is... or anything else like that....

Does this all have something to do with 'Mork and Mindy', 'The Jetsons', or 'My Favorite Martian'?

No geek here...
I am the Anti-Geek. But I do have a sister-in-law who still hangs Enterprise ornaments on the Christmas tree. I do find it all quite amusing - a tad sick - but amusing just the same. Live long and prosper, dudes - nanu, nanu.

Have you seen the movie "American Graffiti"? The licence plate on John Milner's is "THX-138". Who knows that one?

Cpt. Christopher Pike, played by Jeffry Hunter who only appeared in the series pilot "The Cage" and "The Menagerie" which mainly just used clips from "The Cage".

Spock also smiled a lot in the pilot. The logic came later

This was pretty good to see this morning. Not a Heros fan but love to catch sci-fi references. (my personal favorite sci-fi ref was the ship from "Firefly" briefly appearing in the pilot of the new Battlestar Galactica)

BTW: John Milner's licence plate THX 138 appears in some form in all of Lucas's movies. ("prisoner tranfer from cell block 1138" is the version in Star Wars). It is a reference to his first movie THX 1138 with the title character played by Robert Duvall. The reissue with the updated effects they put out a year or so ago wasn't that bad.

And as to geeking out- Life is just much easier when you embrace what you like. If I cared to much what people thought was cool, I would have bought a Harley.

Regards,

TM

I missed the plate on the car but new the meaning when mentioned. I'm a geek. As far a Capt. Pike, didn't he appear in a contained mobile unit due to burns he recieved?
South Park used that in an episode where a teacher had been burned but the wrong child blamed. Just some more geek trivia.

OK Super Geeks! Who can tell me the name of the only character to appear in all three of the original Star Wars movies that did NOT have an action figure created in his/her/it's likeness?

And for more trivia, here's the original Enterprise(NCC1701) hidden within the colonial fleet:
