This global warming stuff is awful. Almost 8am in Alabama, and the thermometer is nearly up to 20°F already. It's a sweltering morning here and the Amsoil 20W/50 in my engine is like a thick molasses that'll tear up a biscuit. My motor won't spin fast enough to start. Never seen nothin' like it.
Let me know when it's over.

Wow a whole WEEK of cold in WINTER and already you guys are saying that global warming is BS. What about THE ENTIRE MONTH OF JANUARY when it was in the 50s and 60s up here?!? This is what you call NORMAL people! Not only that, the whole idea of global warming is 1 or 2 degrees higher AVERAGE over the course of a year. Not a week of hot, or a month of warm in the winter. Average.

This winter's weather has been driven by El Nino, not global warming. But temperatures on the whole are rising; "last year was the warmest in the contiguous United States in more than a century, and 11 of the last 12 years rank among the 12 warmest years on record."

On the other hand, temps in Antarctica have been going down and Eastern Europe has had a few years of the coldest winters recorded. We have a long way to go until we are as warm as the Northern Hemisphere was in the middle ages when they grew grapes in Britain.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

There's a vineyard around 30 miles from me at Coxley in Somerset. (It's on the road between Wells and Glastonbury)
Quote:
The four acres of vines which surround the hotel and conference facilities were planted in 1984. The grapes are a German variety, Riesling and Seyval which are ideally suited to the soils and climatic conditions in this part of Somerset.
Each year, 600 to 800 bottles of wine are produced from the grapes. The pressing is carried out locally. The wine has a medium dry fruity flavour similar to the German Riesling and Seyval wines. Bottles are of course available in our own restaurant, or to purchase and take away.

I read an article on global cooling. said we were actually a few degress cooler by average. personally i think the weather just goes in cycles. i like to watch the news & they say "today's high was 37" back in 1941 the high was 64 & in 2002 it was -14.... go figure.
we should do this every weekend!

Yeah there is evidence of ebbs abd flows temp wise in history. Like some people think there was a mini ice age not that long ago. Can't remember where I heard that... I just hate how people say "global warming my a$$" the second we get a cold day... What about all those summer days? And JANUARY for instance? Truth of the matter is none of us are keeping track of the global temperature average...

If I stay in CT. and live for another 50 to 100 yrs. and Al Gore is right I will have waterfront property. I could then sell my house for a couple of million. Move to VT. or NH live in the mountains and never worry about snow again. You think there is any way to speed this thing up.

We also had an extremely warm January here too. So much so it affected our agriculture quite strangely i.e. products ripening prematurely "thinking" it was spring.

Benny I wasnt gonna reply to this but I was just trying to be a tad funny while whining about the current cold snap. Sorry if it didnt come off that way. Fact is we have the weird winters from time to time. And this past summer was one of the cooler ones I recall. And another fact is we have nothing solid to compare current weather patterns with what it was like say 1000 yrs ago. Or even 500. fossil records show the Earth has been plauged with climate changes since its been an Earth.Perhaps we are still coming out of the last not so minnie ice age.
When asked what he thought of New England weather. Mark Twains reply was "Well there certianly is a lot of it."

It is tough to tell when people are kidding sometimes, isn't it? I happen to be in a kinda crappy mood tonight, so I'm sure I read it wrong! Sorry bout that... Honestly it's not so much you guys, but I hear it all day long, plus I see a lot of people from india/southern asia in my day to day who think weather like this is down right dangerous...I love it Nothing like the sound of car tires crunching ice as you back out of the driveway.

Yep, there are scientists that do that, and I believe the evidence shows a gradual global warming. There is also evidence that the Earth has gone through many warm-cold cycles and that natural phenomenon play a significant role in this.
But, one cannot, out of hand, discount the role that gazillions of tons of hydrocarbon combustion emissions plays in this.
It's a fact. Get used to it.

I believe the Global Warming issue, as presented and pressed upon us is a hoax. It has pure overtones of controlling economies, thus monies and people, overrunning our God given liberties ( as acknowledged in or Declaration of Independence ). I think the "science" that we often hear of is from non climate, non weather, non geographic academics, but mostly from academics who specialize in linguistics, sociology, and whatever. This article I am linking kind of goes in that vein. http://www.canadafreepress.com/2007/global-warming020507.htmI agree that the Earth is a self cleansing entity. The sun is much more the reason for warmth, and the cycles of it and our orbits and other factors are too brief in our minute knowledge to make great and grand decisions to change the world when it isnt changeable. It seems we are at the high line of arrogance to believe we have such monsterous impact, and yet we cant control weather daily. It reminds me of the War of the Worlds, where all man could do, in all his grand abilities, could not stop the Martians, yet a simply virus did. So much isnt in our control and we can greatly exagerate our impact on everything. With the GW thing, I think we are.

Hum, here is Canadian's first Ph.D. Scientist in Climatology claiming today ( http://www.canadafreepress.com/2007/global-warming020507.htm ) that Global Warming is NOT due to human contribution of Carbon Dioxide. He is among many and wonders why those who oppose Greenpeace and Sierra Club, etc. are so personnally attacked? As always, you need to follow that path of the almightly $$...who's stands to gain from spreading fear? I personally would tend to pay more attention to both sides of the argument IF Global Climate change wasn't being used so strongly as a Political Weapon.

The weather goes in cycles. It always has. There have been many wise, thoughtful statements made in this thread. Al Gore may be right too, but a few weeks ago, New England was experiencing a RedNeck winter. I was in the midst of 10° below normal temps. When the Western Hemisphere is colder than normal, it's usually a high pressure push from the Northern East Hemisphere, and versa-vice (jk). This has been happening since weather records have been kept. I am not worried, because if the G.W. prognosticators are correct, it's too late anyway. Ride your motorcycle when you can - the weather just goes in "cycles", why shouldn't we? Just Ride It Safe!

I really is too bad that global warming (and many other topics for that matter) are being used as political fodder, because it detracts from the issue itself. Regardless of who has it on their ticket, or how much it violates our constitutional rights to drive gas guzzlers it doesn't change how that effects global warming, which ever way it effects it, ya know?

The global warming debate always reminds me of an old George Carlin bit. Paraphrasing, "People always talk about how we're destroying the earth. Do you realize how big the earth is? It's going to be here long after we're gone. Eventually it's going to shake us off like a bad case of eczema."

Funny you should mention that. Dr Timothy Ball, the author of that article, is involved with an organization in Canada called Friends of Science that are funded for the most part by oil and gas companies. In an article written about a speech he gave there was this missive:
"Few in the audience have any idea that Prof. Ball hasn't published on climate science in any peer-reviewed scientific journal in more than 14 years. They do not know that he has been paid to speak to federal MPs by a public-relations company that works for energy firms. Nor are they aware that his travel expenses are covered by a group supported by donors from the Alberta oil patch."
Now I'm no tree hugger. If I was I wouldn't ride a bike with old technology that makes it a polluter....especially since I've removed the AI system and the airbox. Like I said, it's a shame this topic has been so politicized, and that goes for both sides of the aisle.

Yeah, the politicization of this serious issue I find a bit odd. Evey one says, "If AL Gore is right." Well, he's just repeating what the majority of climatologists and scientists working in the field believe. In addition to former Senator and Vice President Al Gore (that crack pot), believers include The National Academy of science , George Bush and the current administration who support the findings of the IPCC ,to Pat Robertson who usually takes longer to change his mind then to melt the snows of Kilimanjaro.
Is global warming a certainty? Nothing is. Of course, is a shred of doubt good reason to stick our heads in the sand and do nothing? If there is a huge potential world crisis and we can do something about it, why not do it? People point to the big food shortage that scientists predicted in the 70s that never came. Of course, they fail to note that concern over this global crisis caused new crops and farming techniques to be developed that helped avert this crisis.
Got to defend Al one time though. He never claimed to invent the internet. THat's a misrepresentation of his words. In a 1999 interview with Wolf Blitzer Gore said, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
A bit of an exaggeration, sure, but he was instrumental in it's early funding. Vincent Cerf , often called "the father of the internet" said of Gore's contribution "The Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given to it and related research areas by the Vice President in his current role and in his earlier role as Senator." Dave Ferber, the creator of the Mosaic Web Browser , which wasone of the first popular web browsers and was funded by Gore's initiative. Ferber said the internet "would not be where it is today," without AL Gore. Joseph Traub who headed the computer sience program at Carnegie Mellon and founded Columbia Universities Computer Science program said Gore, "was perhaps the first political leader to grasp the importance of networking the country."
I bring these experts into it as that quote is often sited to undermine the credibility of the former Vice President. Of course, he's just the front man. It's the scientists who do the work whose credibility should matter.

If you want to have some fun, read the environmentalists books from 30 years ago and see how many of their bold predictions have come true. So far they have been wrong 100% of the time. Modern environmentalism has become its own religion complete with its own apocalypse. Funny though, how the apocalypse keeps getting postponed. My high school teacher said the sh!t would hit the fan by 1980 (I graduated in 1972) We were going to have a new ice age and glaciers were going to cover Canada and much of the US. We were supposed to be OUT of oil by the mid 1980’s at the latest. Every one of their predictions has proven wrong. Notice please that the remedy is always the same, destroy the economy of the United States, massively increase taxes, let millions (billions?) die and turn power over to the globalist bureaucrats who should really be running everything anyway.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
