Hello to All,
I am new to this, have been reading and looking at your site for a few years but never posted before. Finally have a question you don't seem to have already answered!
After 36,000 kms I have worn out the stock chain/sprockets, and am completely sick of applying/cleaning off chain lube. I read all the 2 year old discuusions about the belt drives, but what is the latest? How long are they lasting? Any problems? Is QPD still the only source?
Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

I wish those belt drive kits were a bit less expensive. I do believe a more fair price on those would see an upsurge in QPD belt installations. They seem to be priced as pure one offs.

Then again lots of the accessories for our bikes are priced like one offs.

To make a belt drive worth while for me the belt would need to have to last for at least 90,000 kms. Some how I cannot see that happening so it looks like the chain is staying on a bit longer until belt drives become a little more affordable.

If you only sparinguse the right chain lube or even a scott oiler the amount of fling off from the chain minimal.

You are exactly correct on that one. It appears they took the cost to produce it and stuck with that number. Looks like good stuff but not worth that much for those of us on a more limited budget.

In Florida now working on the tornadoes. Note to self: When you get home track down a machine shop and get this stuff built.

There is a machine shop next to the Harley place that makes stuff for the old bikes. If he can make parts, would seem to me he can make a few pulleys.

I am probably wrong but promise to seek out a 2nd opinion.

This is the only real obvious cheap way to go for Triumph. I know personally many folks that went to other bikes for shaft or belt once they saw the chain drive.

Yes they are expensive, no I don't have one (yet), but just remember those kits include the belt. A lot of guys go out to price their own and see they can get pullies cheaper, but they still have to spend ($100+?) on a belt. Sure, overall you might be able to get it made cheaper, but just take that into consideration.

That being said, if anyone finds another source, be sure to post it.

The link for the Goodyear blackhawk belts.
Using this link and the pdf it points to, someone with mechanical knowhow could fab one up I imagine. I believe Ozzie takes a stock sprocket, cuts the teeth off, welds on the belt tooth thingamajig, then makes a new pulley for the rear as well. The link has pulley specs for those that know that kind of stuff, not me though.

You can buy "MPB" (minimum pilot bore) sprockets & bore/broach them to suit the application.
Or, buy pulley stock, cut it to the right width, bore/broach, & roll your own flanges.
There are also a number of shops that specialize in stock/custom timing pulleys.

I kinda thought QPD used the pulley stock approach.
But, I haven't seen one and can see how using an existing sprocket for the hub might be the most economical approach.

Like Ron says - this'd be a fun area to dabble in.
